I'm Different Now

Amid a lingering winter cold, the episode uncovers the mystery of Kureno, a Sohma who is free of the curse yet still chained to Akito by his own choice. His confession to Tohru exposes both the tenderness and the sorrow of a man who stays out of love and pity, and it ends on a truth that reshapes everything.

Kureno reflects on becoming free while remaining tethered, agreeing to Akito's plea that he stay by her side forever. At school, Rin insists to Tohru that she is not with Haru and asks that his name never be spoken to her again. Yuki wishes Tohru a happy new year, and Momiji mentions handing Kureno a DVD of the school's Cinderella-ish performance. Hatori tells Shigure that Akito has kept to her bed since the holiday, and Shigure senses she has chosen Kureno over him.

Watching the DVD, Kureno recalls Akito once asking what flight felt like. He phones Shigure to reach Tohru, and when she stops in a park to watch sparrows, he embraces her without transforming. He explains his curse broke while he was younger than she is, leaving him unable to fly but finally, wholly human and alone inside himself. Returning the DVD as wasted on him, he breaks down when Tohru touches his face, confessing he loves Arisa despite meeting her only twice.

Kureno reveals that although he is free to love anyone, he remains with Akito because the others are not free, and because he could not bear to watch that child weep when the curse released him. He states that the god cannot exist without the zodiac, and then discloses that Akito is in fact a woman.

The title is taken from a line of Kureno's. This finale adapts chapters 96 and 97 along with the first two pages of chapter 98 to complete his arc. The snapping rope symbolizing his freedom was an anime addition, as was the extension of his phone call with Shigure. In the source Hatori smoked during his talk with Shigure, and a flashback of Kureno observing the cursed Sohma at the New Year's ceremony was removed for the adaptation.
