Kodama Horaki

Kodama is drawn as a bespectacled beauty, a college-age young woman whose soft, easygoing air comes through even in her handful of appearances. She is the first daughter of the Horaki household, ahead of Hikari and Nozomi.

What little characterization exists paints her warmly. Official notes describe a mildly gentle temperament, and in the ANIMA continuity Toji remembers her as cheerful company, familiar enough that he called her nee-san. She majors in science at a technical university while covering part-time shifts at a cafe.

Kodama predates her own appearances: the Neon Genesis Evangelion Proposal first cites her inside Hikari's character profile, and in the series itself she surfaces only secondhand, when Hikari brings her up while trying to arrange a date for Asuka with a friend.

The ANIMA novels hand her a grim exit. Traveling through a small German town with her sisters when Armaros turns the Spear of Longinus against the Earth, she is converted to salt along with millions of people worldwide. Hikari later entrusts Toji with a glass ampoule holding her sister's remains, asking him to carry Kodama home to Hakone; Nozomi, she explains, remains in Germany, bound to the Evangelion EURO-II Heurtebise as its only pilot. During the war against Armaros that ampoule becomes a lifeline: faced with a Torwart wearing Kodama's shape, Toji holds up the remains to remind Hikari that the machine is not truly her sister, and the weakened unit crumbles under the Yamato's guns.

Her sole on-screen appearance, shared with Nozomi's, arrives in episode 31 of Shinkansen Henkei Robo Shinkalion THE ANIMATION, where the sisters give series protagonist Hayato Hayasugi a car ride. Junko Iwao, Hikari's voice actress from the Evangelion anime, voices all three siblings, and Kazuya Tsurumaki designed both Kodama and Nozomi.
