Pocoloco

Pocoloco is a Black man whose height runs from average to a touch above it, with a build somewhere between slim and medium. A slender horseshoe mustache traces his lip. His wardrobe stays light, topped by a cap styled after an old leather aviator helmet and studded with distinctive oval plates.

Sunny and unbothered, Pocoloco first turns up lazing about and tallying clouds, thrilled by the prediction that his luck is cresting. To the aging farmhand he works beside, he reads as idle and green. Over time he builds an almost religious trust in that luck, watching moments that should have wrecked him instead hand him improbable breaks, and he punctuates his astonishment with cries of "UH OH!".

Born in Georgia in 1869 and orphaned of his father, Pocoloco ends up farming alongside an older man who had known the deceased. Three days ahead of the race he heads into town to gamble, loses, and crosses paths with a fortune teller resembling Enya the Hag, who promises him two months at the summit of his life's luck. A newspaper ad for the Steel Ball Run and its huge purse convinces him to sign on and test the prophecy. During the first stage he also manifests Hey Ya!, a Stand that offers only encouragement yet dispenses advice too precise to be coincidence.

He oversleeps on opening day yet quickly rejoins the pack, and one lucky break after another carries him forward: manure to the face conceals a gold coin, Sandman's counsel saves him at a ravine, and his horse drags him clear of deadly branches in the forest. He trades the lead with Johnny Joestar, tumbles during the downhill dash only to slide to safety on a dead cow after Hey Ya! goads him on, and later rides a concealed branch like a ramp toward the finish.

Though Gyro Zeppeli crosses first, a penalty drops Gyro to 21st, leaving Pocoloco better placed. He stays a constant top-ten contender, seizes first place in the fifth stage, and slips to third behind Johnny and Gyro in the sixth. Finishing the whole event unhurt, he takes second in the closing stage and second overall. After the parallel-world Diego Brando mysteriously vanishes, the race title is ultimately awarded to Pocoloco. In the JORGE JOESTAR novel, an alternate version of him becomes an astronaut sent to Mars, only to be betrayed and killed by Funnier Valentine.
