Supersonic Waves

Supersonic Waves is a vibration-based defense that Sailor Moon falls back on when nothing else can shield her, with Sailor Chibi Moon later doing the same. Rather than a deliberate spell, it kicks in when either guardian panics and starts to cry. The Odango Covers on their hair then light up and magnify the sobbing into a sound so overwhelming that it hurts anyone attacking them.

The trigger is emotional rather than tactical: overwhelmed and helpless, the wielder breaks down in tears, and the amplified crying does the work. The blast can shatter glass, and in one anime instance the combined version leveled a whole building. It rarely comes out unless the user has no other means of protecting herself.

Sailor Moon is the primary user, with Sailor Chibi Moon joining the roster later. In the manga, Usagi cries her way through her first fight against Morga, while Chibiusa lets it loose against Resin, whose dental tools set off her aching cavities until her screams smash the glass around them. The anime shows it twice, first in the opening episode where Sailor Moon's wailing stuns Morga's brainwashed victims, and again in episode 153, where she and Chibi Moon join forces to freeze PallaPalla's Lemures GariGari and bring down an entire building. In the Crystal series she uses it early on, though it proves useless against Garoben. Video game versions renamed it Supersonic Attack in the arcade release and Supersonic Cry on the Mega Drive.
