A color-coded trap exposes WISE's informant inside the SSS, and Loid's masquerade as Wheeler collapses at gunpoint. His escape through a booby-trapped park ends with two Yuri Briars trading bullets in the sewers beneath Shellbury.
At the park, the man the SSS believes to be Wheeler stalls the handoff by demanding proof they are genuine agents. Asked the same in return, he cites the arranged signal: a green tie paired with a yellow gemstone pin. When the color reaches SSS headquarters, the Boss corners a staffer named Jeffrey and explains that no gemstone color was ever set; different answers were seeded with different personnel precisely to trace a suspected leak. The yellow response marks Jeffrey as WISE's informant, and it simultaneously proves the man in the park is a fake.
That fake is Loid, running interference to keep the SSS away from the real defector. Guns come out as the agents believe Twilight is finally cornered, but Loid has salted the grounds in advance, detonating the fountain as a distraction and dropping pursuers with rope snares hidden beneath the leaves. A search team then finds an injured Yuri nearby who directs them toward the east gate, only to spring upright the moment they leave: another of Loid's rapid disguises. The genuine Yuri, combing the park with the Lieutenant, spots an impossibility, his own footprint in ground he has never walked. Reasoning that a panicking Twilight has gone underground, he descends into the sewers while backup seals the exits above.
Around a corner, a swung metal pipe ambushes him. The attacker levels a pistol but wavers, and Yuri freezes at the sight of his assailant: Twilight wearing his own face. Both men open fire. Back in Berlint, Yor shatters a plate belonging to Loid, cuts her finger gathering the pieces, and blames Yuri's talk of cheating for rattling her as she wonders how late her husband will be.
The SSS's gemstone ruse unmasks Jeffrey as WISE's man inside their ranks, costing the Western agency its source, while Loid's Wheeler disguise is blown at the park handoff. Pre-planted traps let him slip the encirclement.
Yuri tracks the fugitive into the Shellbury sewers and comes face to face with Twilight disguised as himself, opening the first direct clash between the two men in their covert capacities.
Loid and Yuri meet for the first time in their secret roles as spy and secret police officer, though Yuri has no idea the doppelganger is his brother-in-law. Jeffrey debuts here, and the scarred officer who sees through the impostor is only given the name Gascoigne in the following chapter. The anime splits this chapter between Episode 48 and Episode 49.
