Summary

The chapter formally introduces Sylvia Sherwood, who commands a corps of agents for WISE, the Eastern-focused division of the Westalis Intelligence Services, behind her official cover, an attaché posting at the Westalis embassy in Ostania. Performing flawlessly under relentless SSS surveillance has earned her the nickname Fullmetal Lady among her subordinates.

Trailed through the streets by two SSS men, Sylvia swiftly spots every other follower in the crowd. Her unvarying Wednesday routine of identical clothes, errands, and a trip to the public pool has lulled her watchers into complacency, and they wander off for food while she waits inside. In the changing room she swaps outfits, dons a short black wig, and walks out unnoticed, quietly pleased with her new coat. In disguise she meets Twilight to share what the financial records of Donovan Desmond's partners turned up. Loid notices the price tag still dangling from her coat but is too afraid to say so.

On another occasion, Loid helps her shed pursuers before a rendezvous, signaling their positions through a shop window's reflection and asking whether they should call it off. Sylvia refuses and directs him to Point C, where she requests an update on Operation Strix. Loid reports that Anya can now clear two vaulting boxes and string together five jump-rope skips, and a deadpan Sylvia stares at her subordinate, telling herself he has to be joking.
