The fourteenth chapter of Tokyo Ghoul splits its focus between the CCG plotting a strike and a quieter afternoon at Anteiku, where Kaneki bonds with young Hinami over books. The calm frays as Hinami senses she and her mother are being followed through the city.
Inside CCG headquarters, Koutarou Amon turns over the ghoul mask tied to case 696 to Kureo Mado. Mado offers a mocking sort of praise, and Amon shrugs it off as nothing more than an investigator's duty before urging that they act. Mado replies that the plan is already set.
Over at Anteiku, Kaneki is sent for coffee beans and stumbles into Hinami Fueguchi mid-meal by accident. On Enji Koma's advice he apologizes with a cup of coffee, and Hinami's keen nose immediately notices he does not smell fully like a ghoul from across the room. As Kaneki describes his half-ghoul nature, he lights up at finding her reading one of his favorite books. When she stumbles over a kanji while naming her favorite story, he starts coaching her through unfamiliar words, and she marvels at how clever he is, admitting she skips school and studies from notes instead.
Elsewhere Yoshimura speaks with Ryouko Fueguchi, who resolves to start hunting for her own food rather than leaning on Anteiku. Before the pair depart, Hinami thanks Kaneki for the reading lesson. Out on the streets, though, Hinami catches an odd scent and warns that two grown men are tailing them. Back with the investigators, Mado remarks to Amon that rain both hampers his work and drowns out the cries of ghouls he puts down, noting that Ryouko is somewhere close by.
The installment belongs to the second volume of the series and marks an early step in the growing bond between Kaneki and Hinami before the danger closing in on her family arrives.
