Pioneer voice actor from Hokkaido who defined the original Dragon Ball with his work as the sinister King Piccolo and his counterpart Kami. A beloved industry figure honored with a lifetime achievement award.
Takeshi Aono voiced three essential characters in original Dragon Ball: the evil, world-threatening King Piccolo; the benevolent but stern Kami; and the heroic, saintly Hero. His voice work across these roles showcased the range required to embody the duality of a single being split between good and evil. His portrayal of the egomaniacal King Piccolo established the tyrant as Dragon Ball's first truly menacing villain, while his quieter work as Kami defined the godly mentor figure who would guide the heroes through countless challenges. Aono's vocal flexibility made the connection between these characters palpable and psychologically complex.
Born in Asahikawa in 1936, Aono became a revered voice acting icon with roles in Space Battleship Yamato, Fist of the North Star, GeGeGe no Kitaro, and countless others. A May 2010 stroke ended his voice acting career, and he passed away in April 2012 at age 75. In recognition of his six decades of contributions to the medium, he posthumously received a lifetime achievement award at the 7th Seiyu Awards in March 2013, cementing his legacy as one of voice acting's greatest pioneers.
