Artificial Devil Fruit

Every one of these lab-grown fruits traces back to Vegapunk's study of the way a Devil Fruit reshapes its eater's Lineage Factor, a discovery he then turned toward the blood itself. Two scientists once tied to the research body MADS pulled the feat off, yet by very different routes. Serving the World Government, Vegapunk started from the Lineage Factor of a person who already ate a fruit and eventually copied both Zoan powers and a few Paramecia ones, whereas Caesar Clown relied on the Lineage Factor of everyday beasts and could only churn out Zoan-style imitations.

By Vegapunk's own admission, even the cleverest mind alive struggled to forge a true Devil Fruit, and Logia abilities defied recreation entirely. Both men's products steal the swimmer's talent just as a real fruit would. Manufactured Zoans also look nothing like the genuine article, coming out as sleek, apple-like objects marked with a ring rather than the familiar swirl, and their powers vanish outright at the eater's death instead of reappearing in a new fruit.

Zoan stands as the sole class that can be fabricated in full, and Vegapunk held that any Zoan, a Mythical one included, was reproducible with sufficient funds and patience, though nobody knows if such powers can awaken. Caesar builds his SMILE fruits by soaking natural fruits in the chemical SAD, but rather than tidy shifts they sprout animal parts from the eater's frame, and their strength trails well behind real Zoans. Roughly one in ten SMILEs actually confers a power; the rest are duds that strip the consumer of ability, take away swimming, and lock their expressions to joy alone, the merciless quirk from which the fruits earned their label.

No Paramecia fruit can be rebuilt as an object, yet the powers themselves are still copyable. Distilling a purpose-made fluid called Green Blood from a genuine user's bloodline components allows those powers to be transferred into someone else. That process underpins the Seraphim weapons, whose copied Paramecia gifts course through the Green Blood in their limbs.

Kouzuki Momonosuke consumed the artificial Zoan Vegapunk branded a flop, one patterned on Kaidou's Uo Uo no Mi through the Emperor's Lineage Factor. Labeled a dud purely because its dragon shape emerged pink where the original was blue, the fruit lets the boy become a yellow-maned dragon and summon Flame Clouds, with his early trouble over size and command later traced to his tender age rather than the fruit.

The Beasts Pirates hoarded Caesar's SMILEs and fed them to about 5000 recruits, producing some 500 working Gifters against roughly 4500 dud-swallowing Pleasures. Vegapunk's Green Blood, in turn, fitted the Seraphim with stand-ins for Paramecia powers, so that S-Shark carries the Sui Sui no Mi, S-Bear the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi, S-Snake the Mero Mero no Mi, and S-Hawk the Supa Supa no Mi.
