Mark was assigned to escort Joseph Joestar and his companions to the site where the Pillar Men lay. The Nazi command had grown curious about the Ripple, and Mark himself hoped Robert E. O. Speedwagon would share what he knew so the creatures could be wiped out before they stirred. His friendship with Caesar went back years, and it was Caesar who had introduced him to the woman he meant to marry.
At the cavern, though, he blundered into the three beings, which had already broken from their long slumber. Before he could retreat, Wamuu passed clean through him and absorbed half his body. His dying request was for Caesar to grant him a swift, painless end, which Caesar delivered by driving the Ripple into his heart. That loss steeled Caesar for the clash with the Pillar Men that followed soon after.
