Key Events

Checking that the earlier blast cracked none of his bones, Toji prepares a separate answer for each of the three powers of Limitless, fastening a chain to the Inverted Spear of Heaven for the job. Still, a vague dread nags at him as Satoru floats overhead, inverted and grinning, undaunted by losing their last exchange. Shaking off the feeling, Toji whips the chain all around him. To Riko, Satoru offers an apology, admitting he holds no vengeance for her, and proclaims himself the single honored one throughout all heaven and earth. A dust wave from Toji drives him upward, and there the spear appears right in front of him.

With the strike likely to connect, Satoru turns to countering. Inherited arts come with manuals that other houses can decipher, so he pegs his foe as a Zenin, yet a single technique remains known to only a handful of Gojo. The Hollow Technique marries the motion of blue to the reversal of red, smashing two infinities together into an imaginary mass that wipes out anything it contacts. Satoru releases Hollow Technique: Purple, erasing a wide section of Toji's left torso and leaving a lethal wound. Toji realizes his dread came from breaking his own code; he should have grabbed his money and run, but a small, bitter urge to humiliate jujutsu society and the clan that cast him out had taken hold, and that betrayal of himself is what truly beat him. Pressed for last words, he claims none, then pictures young Megumi and warns Satoru that his son will be handed to the Zenin clan within a few years, to do with however he wishes.

Notes

This chapter unveils Hollow Technique: Purple and the cursed tool Chain of a Thousand Miles, alongside the Inverted Spear of Heaven and Limitless. The line about being the honored one would become one of Gojo's defining quotes. Its events were adapted into the twenty-eighth anime episode, and Toji graces the cover.
