Akio Otsuka

In One Piece, Ōtsuka voices Marshall D. Teach, better known as Blackbeard, one of the series' most menacing antagonists. His broader catalog includes Solid Snake across the Metal Gear series and Jigen Daisuke in Lupin III.

Ōtsuka has built a career on morally ambiguous, gravel-voiced characters, with credits including Batou in Ghost in the Shell, Xehanort in the Kingdom Hearts games, Wamuu in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Shunsui Kyoraku in Bleach, and Thorkell in Vinland Saga. That catalog, alongside his role as Blackbeard in One Piece, defines the type of character most associated with his voice.

Ōtsuka serves as the standard Japanese dubbing voice for several Hollywood actors, including Steven Seagal, Nicolas Cage, Samuel L. Jackson, and Denzel Washington. This dubbing work runs alongside his original voice acting roles in anime and games.

Ōtsuka is the son of actor Chikao Otsuka. Voice acting runs in the family, with Akio building his own extensive career across anime and video games since 1988.

Ōtsuka spent decades with the talent agency Mausu Promotion before departing in 2026 to work independently. The move came after a long career built largely around morally ambiguous, gravel-voiced roles like Blackbeard in One Piece.
