Blackwhip

Character

Blackwhip is the Quirk Daigoro Banjo carried into One For All, where it waited until Izuku Midoriya's anger dragged it into the open. Tendrils of dark energy grab, swing, bind, and eventually brace Izuku's body from the inside, right up until he forces the power onto Tomura Shigaraki.

Overview

Blackwhip is a medium-range Emitter Quirk, originating with Daigoro Banjo and passed afterward to Izuku Midoriya as one of the powers stored inside One For All. It debuts in Chapter 210 and reaches the anime in Episode 98. Its final holder is Tomura Shigaraki, who receives it through a forced blood transference at the close of the Final War.

Mechanics

The user grows energy tendrils out of any part of the body and steers them at will, each one black with a glowing teal edge. Emotion is the fuel, anger above all, so a furious wielder gets a stronger whip. The Paranormal Liberation War proved the point: channeling his rage and hatred toward Tomura, Izuku drove the power hard enough to restrain an opponent who had shrugged off his earlier attempts. Daigoro rated it a top-grade Quirk, and its obvious uses are capturing enemies and improving mobility, since anything the tendrils seize becomes an anchor.

Izuku found a second role for it as a brace. Wrapping tendrils around his arms cut the damage from firing One For All at full output, and by the Final War he had taken the idea inward, running Blackwhip through his own body to envelop his muscles and tendons and hold them together under strain. He pushes further still, puppeting a paralyzed body with the tendrils and sheathing himself in armor made from them.

Control is the price. Daigoro warned that a user who loses hold of their emotions loses hold of the power, and Izuku bears this out both during the war and afterward: the more unstable he becomes, the wilder the tendrils get, until they swallow his entire body. Being empowered by One For All has only made it harder to master, and Daigoro was explicit that this is not a Quirk anyone can use carelessly.

Notable Users

Daigoro Banjo, while alive, kept things simple, using the tendrils for mid-air maneuvering and binding enemies. By the time the Quirk reaches Izuku it has evolved inside One For All's core, far stronger and much broader in scope. Its first appearance is a disaster: fixed on catching a target and angry, he watches it erupt from his arm in tendrils so large that they wrack him with agony and beat him down. A later attempt, grabbing pipes that were about to hit him, lasted only a moment before the power's strength left his arm numb.

After the Joint Training Battle he learned to run a smaller, weaker version at no physical cost, provided he stayed calm and kept under five percent. During the second round of Hero Work-Studies, fighting Ending, he caught falling cars with it, and he told All Might that a single second was all he had at that point, enough for support techniques but nowhere near what would let him fight the way Shota Aizawa or Hanta Sero do. By the Paranormal Liberation War he was grappling, slingshotting, and swinging off buildings, hauling buses and other heavy objects, and striking at villains including Tomura, who slipped free and countered. To keep One For All hidden, he told people that Blackwhip was simply another manifestation of his original power rather than a Quirk of its own.

The refinements kept coming. Tendrils wound around his forearm buffered the recoil when he drove a high-percentage smash into Tomura, reinforcing the limb from the inside out so it would not shatter. With his limbs wrecked he fired a tendril from his mouth and named the move Froppy Style as a nod to Tsuyu Asui and her own tongue ability. Searching for All For One and for the League of Villains, he learned to blend One For All at 45 percent with Blackwhip and Fa Jin for speeds matching a full 100 percent without the usual recoil, and his trained parallel processing let six tendrils sprout from his back at once, acting as subconscious extra limbs that steered him without any guidance from his arms. By the Final War he had it completely: Blackchain, built from Blackwhip and Fa Jin, snared Tomura through an absolute defense form and flung him across the U.A. battlefield, while Deku Overlay let him move under Gearshift's recoil with tendrils pulling at his own muscles and tendons. The fight ends with Izuku forcing Blackwhip and every other Quirk inside One For All into Tomura, hoping to destroy the leaden soul within him, and the power is wiped out in the process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Blackwhip Deku's quirk?

Blackwhip is not originally Izuku Midoriya's Quirk. It first belonged to Daigoro Banjo and was passed down as one of the powers stored inside One For All, which Izuku inherited and eventually learned to control.

Why did Deku cover himself in Blackwhip?

During the Final War, Izuku Midoriya used Blackwhip to brace his own body, wrapping tendrils around his muscles and tendons to hold them together under the strain of fighting at full power. He had already used a similar technique on his arms to cut the recoil damage from One For All.

How did Deku get Blackwhip?

Izuku Midoriya awakened Blackwhip on his own after One For All passed it down from its original user, Daigoro Banjo. It first emerged during a moment of intense anger, since the Quirk's strength is fueled by the user's emotions.

What is the meaning of Blackwhip?

Blackwhip refers to the energy tendrils the Quirk produces, which are black with a glowing teal edge and can grab, bind, and swing like a whip. The power originated with Daigoro Banjo before being passed down through One For All.

Who ends up with Blackwhip at the end of My Hero Academia?

Tomura Shigaraki becomes Blackwhip's final holder after receiving it through a forced blood transference at the close of the Final War. Izuku Midoriya forces Blackwhip and every other Quirk inside One For All into Tomura, and the power is destroyed in the process.
