Dark Shadow

Written as Dāku Shadō, this long-range Emitter Quirk belongs to Fumikage Tokoyami of Class 1-A and appears as early as Chapter 4 and Episode 4. What it grants him is a shadowy, monstrous being that emerges from his body on command and withdraws just as readily.

Calling it a power undersells it. The entity is sentient, holds conversations, and behaves as Fumikage's personal guardian, carrying out his instructions and protecting him no matter what condition it happens to be in. A tether that Shihai Kuroiro likens to an umbilical cord always joins the two, even across distance, and they communicate by some telepathic channel.

Their bodies stay separate in every way that counts. Pain and exhaustion do not carry between them, so putting one down leaves the other free to keep working. Dark Shadow reshapes itself within limits, stretching its arms and neck at need. Its substance is described as dark energy, yet it remains solid enough to grip and strike the physical world, and that energy runs out. Once depleted it withdraws into Fumikage, and it drains faster when it takes repeated hits or strays too far from him. Recharging means keeping it away from any light at all. It was the first Quirk in the series shown to be a sentient being, with Soul the second.

Ambient brightness governs both personality and output, and the trade runs in a straight line. Lit up, Dark Shadow shrinks, turns docile, and follows orders easily, which also makes it weak enough that opponents have little to fear. Quirks that throw off strong light are therefore its worst matchup: Explosion, Electrification, and Impure Beam grind it down because each one attacks and weakens it in the same motion, even though it can still block them.

Darkness inverts everything. Powerful and vicious, it lashes out at anything that moves or makes noise without discriminating between targets, and its obedience collapses in proportion to its strength, leaving Fumikage struggling to keep it on task.

Mezo Shoji identifies the aggravating factor. Fumikage's own negative feelings, regret and indignation among them, feed the dark version until it can refuse his commands outright and begin swallowing his body in its spreading darkness. Carried far enough, it moves him around against his will and strips him of control entirely.

Fumikage Tokoyami is the only holder. His style is to hang back and send Dark Shadow forward, letting it fight in his place and absorb incoming hits on his behalf, while it doubles as transport by hauling him or his allies up structures. Most of its offense comes from stretching or enlarging its arms to seize or slam an opponent, which keeps Fumikage clear of the exchange and makes him close to unbeatable in a straight duel.

Under little or no light the creature becomes a large, ferocious beast whose claws can tear through dozens of trees in one swing. Moonfish, a hardened villain, was overwhelmed by that form and had his Blade-Tooth defenses shattered instantly. Following his work-study alongside Hawks, Fumikage worked out a way to fly: since Dark Shadow floats and can carry its host, it wraps him in its arms and moves him through the air. All For One coveted the Quirk after seeing what it could do, rating it alongside Hellflame among the greatest hero threats and noting that touching Dark Shadow itself would not let him steal it, while Kyudai Garaki put it near the top of his wish list for the Nomu.

The named techniques build outward from there. Black Abyss, formerly Abyssal Black Body, wears Dark Shadow as armor and covers for Fumikage's physical shortcomings. Piercing Twilight Claws shoots a claw from his arm to strike at distance, and Covert Black-Ops Arms enlarges both arms to crush a target. Sabbath combines flight speed with Black Abyss and two shadow claws for a diving strike. Black Fallen Angel, devised under Hawks, has Dark Shadow beat its arms like wings while carrying him. Ragnarök deliberately unleashes the berserker form at massive size while keeping it under control, and Womb wraps an enlarged Dark Shadow around a target to trap them. Fleeting Blow channels Ragnarök's power into a single armored punch, Total Release charges the creature on multiple sources of darkness before letting it loose, and Light of Baldur stacks Total Release, Black Abyss, and Inasa Yoarashi's Whirlwind behind one strike.
