Invisibility

Character

Invisibility keeps Toru Hagakure permanently unseen, a Mutant Quirk with no off switch and an inherited pedigree. What began as pure stealth grew, through training, into deliberate control of light itself, letting her blind opponents at close range and even redirect a classmate's laser.

Overview

Written as Tōmeika, Invisibility is classed as a Mutant Quirk operating at contact range, introduced in Chapter 8 and animated from Episode 6. Toru Hagakure carries it, as do both of her parents.

The power rests on refraction. Light striking her body bends around it automatically, without any conscious effort on her part, leaving nothing for an observer to fix on.

Mechanics

Because no part of her registers to the naked eye, reading Toru is nearly impossible. Her presence goes undetected and her expressions convey nothing unless she announces aloud what she feels.

Light manipulation is baked into the Quirk's nature, and study turned that latent property into a tool. Toru learned to treat herself as a prism and steer the light passing through her. Ordinary light handled this way carries no more danger than daylight, and its use is simply to dazzle. Feed the same process something already destructive, such as Navel Laser, and the beam keeps its bite while changing direction or tightening its focus.

Two named techniques come out of this. Warp Refraction, or Shūkō Kussetsu, turns her body into a lens that warps light and blinds anyone standing close. Warp Refraction: Navel Laser takes Yuga Aoyama's beam and scatters it outward in every direction, blinding and wounding whatever surrounds her.

Clothing and gear stay stubbornly visible, so the Quirk only pays off once she removes everything, which in turn leaves bare skin exposed to heat and cold. Certain powers cut through the concealment as well. Mezo Shoji's Dupli-Arms sharpens his senses enough to locate her, and Kinoko Komori's Mushroom coats her in fungus until a silhouette appears.

There is no switching it off, either. Refracting light can betray her real face, which happened when she turned Yuga's Navel Laser aside. During the Final War she found that an Awakening had strengthened his beam, and the intensified light made her Quirk glitch. It faltered again when she refracted a full blast from All For One's Omni-Factor Unleash, and once more in class when Yuga loosed a volley of laser bullets to lift everyone's spirits after announcing he was leaving U.A. High School. The glitches grew common enough that she eventually built an invisible suit into her Hero costume to avoid accidental exposure on the job.

Notable Users

Toru Hagakure of Class 1-A is the Quirk's showcase. Stealth is its obvious application, letting her slip past any purely visual watch, which suits ambushes, reconnaissance and dodging attacks outright. Those gains only arrive when she is stripped of clothing and equipment, which exposes her to other kinds of detection, cold surfaces among them.

Training expanded her repertoire. By Chapter 108 she could gather and intensify light inside herself well enough to blind people, and her Hero Work-Studies under Yoroi Musha sharpened the skill until she could take hold of Yuga Aoyama's Navel Laser outright.

Her mother and father share the same invisible bodies. Whether either of them can manipulate light the way their daughter does is left unanswered.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who has invisibility in MHA?

Toru Hagakure of Class 1-A is the primary user of Invisibility, a Mutant Quirk that keeps her body permanently unseen; both of her parents share the same invisible bodies.

Why is Toru Hagakure visible now?

Toru Hagakure's Invisibility Quirk sometimes glitches when it refracts extremely powerful light, briefly revealing her face; this happened when she deflected an Awakened Navel Laser from Yuga Aoyama and again when she refracted a blast from All For One's Omni-Factor Unleash during the Final War.
