Summary

Class 1-A changes into hero costumes and gathers at the training grounds for the Battle Trial. All Might lays out the format: indoor combat, two against two, one pair defending and one pair attacking. The defenders guard a mock nuclear device they intend to deploy. The attackers win by securing the core or capturing their opponents before time expires, and the defenders win by running out the clock or capturing the attackers.

A lottery sorts everyone into teams, and All Might calls the opening match. Izuku Midoriya and Ochaco Uraraka take the hero role against Katsuki Bakugo and Tenya Ida, while the rest of the class watches on monitors in the surveillance room.

The defenders go in first, and the attackers follow five minutes later to start the trial. Katsuki ambushes the pair almost immediately. His opening Explosion tears away half of Izuku's mask, though Izuku shoves Ochaco clear of the blast. When Katsuki winds up again, Izuku intercepts, catches the right arm, and slams him onto the floor. The counter came from study: Izuku had filled notebooks with observations on heroes, Katsuki included, the same pages Katsuki once blew up and tossed aside. Izuku tells him the pushover Deku he used to shove around is gone, replaced by a Deku whose whole vibe is refusing to quit. The declaration leaves Katsuki seething.
