Stiffening

Character

Stiffening lets Shikkui Makabe rob an object of its give simply by touching it. Rubber balls worked between his palms come away with the density of concrete, hard enough to punch through stone when thrown, though the effect refuses to take hold on anything alive.

Overview

Shikkui Makabe of Ketsubutsu Academy carries this emitter Quirk, which requires contact to function. It first appears in Chapter 104 and is animated in Episode 54.

Two other powers frame it neatly. Hardening runs in the opposite direction by toughening only the user's own body, while Softening does the reverse job on foreign objects, making Stiffening the mirror image of both.

Mechanics

Anything Shikkui lays hands on can be made rigid. He works the process by kneading a target between both palms, and the transformation is dramatic: rubber balls treated this way take on the toughness of concrete and will shatter solid rock if thrown hard enough.

The limits are firm. Living beings are simply outside the Quirk's reach. Hardened objects also carry vulnerabilities of their own, offering no protection against acid and remaining liable to get stuck in viscous substances.

Notable Users

Shikkui Makabe is the sole holder. His most effective showing comes as a support role rather than a solo one.

Paired with Boomerang, the Quirk shines. Shikkui supplies reinforced projectiles for that ability's user to throw, turning ordinary objects into something with real destructive weight and making the two powers a natural combination.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Shikkui Makabe's Quirk in My Hero Academia?

Shikkui Makabe's Quirk is Stiffening, an emitter type ability of Ketsubutsu Academy that lets him harden any object he touches simply by kneading it between his palms.

How does the Stiffening Quirk work?

Stiffening works through contact: Shikkui Makabe kneads an object between both hands, and it hardens dramatically, turning something as soft as a rubber ball into material tough enough to shatter solid rock when thrown.

What are the weaknesses of the Stiffening Quirk?

Stiffening cannot affect living beings at all, and objects it hardens are not immune to acid and can still become stuck in viscous substances.

How is Stiffening different from Hardening and Softening in My Hero Academia?

Stiffening hardens objects the user touches, which contrasts with Hardening, which only toughens the user's own body, and Softening, which weakens outside objects instead of strengthening them.

Who does Shikkui Makabe team up with using Stiffening?

Shikkui Makabe pairs well with Boomerang, supplying that Quirk's user with reinforced, hardened projectiles that hit with far more destructive force than ordinary thrown objects.
