A moustache and a buzz cut sit atop a frame that runs to 190 centimeters and carries obvious muscle. His hair is black and his eyes gray, and he is most often seen in a pilot suit behind the controls of his aircraft.

Everything about him reads as career military: steady, dependable, and loyal to the people beside him. A real bond formed early between Cathleen Bate and the men of his brigade, propping her up when she faltered, telling her flatly that she had already outgrown All Might in their eyes, and promising to be there whenever New Order hit its ceiling. He has brushed against death often enough not to flinch at it, and he took open pride in how far she came.

That steadiness includes a readiness to be spent. He offered himself for Cathleen to destroy if it would take Tomura Shigaraki with him, an offer she could not bring herself to accept. Her death hit him hard, and he honored her last wish by turning over everything his team had gathered to Japan's heroes for the final fight.

Army service gave him competence in hand-to-hand fighting and in reading dangerous situations, and he has the record to prove it: when the woman who would rank as America's top hero first arrived in his unit, Ethan beat her repeatedly in Quirkless sparring, and only some years later did she start winning. Their sparring stopped after that, though he looks back on it fondly. As Bravo Leader he commands his fellow pilots while personally piloting an X-66, handling it with precision and putting laser fire exactly where he wants it.
