Near High-End Nomu

Character

Pulled out of their tanks before the conditioning was finished, the Near High-Ends are Tomura Shigaraki's blunt instrument in the Paranormal Liberation War. They carry High-End power without High-End thought, and across three separate battlefields the Heroes learn exactly how much ruin a mindless one can cause.

Appearance

Three variants have been catalogued out of the batch. One stands upright with wings sprouting where its arms ought to be, ringed at the head by a mane of trunk-like growths. A second is enormous and modeled after a lamprey, all mouth and body. The third is built on a smaller frame and reads as canine, which is where its Hound label comes from.

Abilities

Doctor Garaki rates the batch at genuine High-End strength and speed, minus the intelligence that separates a finished product. Most run on Super Regeneration. The winged specimen also holds Wing, which grows a flight-capable pair on command, and Burst, a self-detonation triggered by whoever is giving orders.

All For One keeps adding Quirks to them between engagements, and Tomura treats the survivors as a parts bin, taking Wing for himself and later pulling a spare Regeneration Quirk to replace what New Order destroyed. Gang Orca notices the reverse during the Final War: the Okuto Island pair have no regeneration at all, which is exactly why they can be put down.

History

They sleep in storage beneath Jaku General Hospital while the Heroes raid it, and Tomura steers his Decay around them as the building comes down. Radio Waves wakes them with one order: kill whatever is breathing on the surface. Fresh from stasis they fight like feral animals instead of a unit, and half of them die for it, though they take half the Hero force with them before they steady. Once they coordinate, four peel off to free Tomura and Gigantomachia from Best Jeanist's threads, and Lemillion cannot beat them but holds them long enough for Nejire Chan, Ingenium, and Dynamight to arrive. The stalemate breaks when All For One, now driving Tomura's body, calls the retreat: ten abandon Gigantomachia, Mr. Compress, and Himiko Toga to carry off "Tomura" and Spinner, three are destroyed in the chase, and seven get clear. Those survivors storm Tartarus, kill the guards Briareos and Gyges, and keep attacking from the water after the bridge drops into the ocean while the flying one delivers its passenger to the door.

The winged one serves as a mount against Star and Stripe until "Tomura" feeds it to a Tiamat missile strike as bait and orders it to Burst. Six remain for the Final War, warped in and then scattered by Operation Troy across the Gunga ruins, Okuto Island, and Kamino. Himiko lures the Okuto pair with All For One's Nomu-attracting drug to buy herself cover, and Dabi reaches Skeptic through a communication device he had planted on the Kamino unit. All of them are beaten in the end, the Gunga survivor marched away by Shishido and the Okuto pair confirmed captured. What became of them afterward is not recorded.
