Shihai Kuroiro

Skin the color of pitch is the first thing anyone notices, an effect almost certainly tied to the Quirk he carries. Above it sits a mess of soft white hair, and his eyes are narrow and long, usually set in an expression somewhere between uncertain and annoyed. He is tall for his year.

His costume keeps things plain: a black jumpsuit with a high collar, pale shoes trimmed dark, and broad silver wristbands notched with three rectangles. The timeskip adds a little height, parts his hair down the middle and calms it down, and otherwise leaves the outfit alone.

Shihai schemes. He would rather ambush a problem than meet it head-on, he gravitates toward dark subject matter, and he delivers his lines with the same theatrical relish Fumikage Tokoyami does, which is part of why the two are read as counterparts across the class divide. He tried to get under Fumikage's skin before their match and still feels a certain kinship with him.

Girls undo all of that composure. He is transparently taken with Kinoko Komori, averting his eyes and stumbling over words around her, quietly thrilled when she compliments him during the Joint Training Battle, and visibly sour when she gives her attention to Juzo or Fumikage instead. Conversation with girls in general defeats him, and he tends to read any of it as interest. Years later, once both are pros, he and Kinoko are together. His stated favorite things are taboos, and squid ink pasta is the food he likes best.

Black lets Shihai sink into anything sufficiently dark, whether the darkness is the object's own color or something cast onto it, shadows included. Inside a black structure he can travel its full length at high speed, carrying a passenger if he wants, which makes concealment and ambush his natural mode rather than a straight fight. Training extended the Quirk: he can now move what he occupies, provided the thing is capable of movement on its own, which is how he seized Fumikage's Dark Shadow long enough to turn it against its owner. The speed alone has done plenty of work, letting him take Yuga Aoyama out of a fight before his teammates registered it and evade Momo Yaoyorozu's nets by dropping into the shadow of the next pipe over. Darkseek is his named move, a snatch executed from inside a black surface.

The reason his classmates rate him as 1-B's stealthiest is that he thinks the setup through first. Ahead of the second Joint Training round he reasoned that a darkness Quirk would draw a darkness Quirk, made himself Fumikage's fixation on purpose, and then leaned on Ground Gamma's maze of industrial pipes to make his position unknowable while his camouflage did the rest. He even accounted for the way the tether trailing behind Dark Shadow would slow his opponents down. What he did not account for was Black Fallen Angel and the speed it handed Fumikage, which closed the gap in the end. He graduates and turns pro under the name Vantablack, rendered Vantadark in the English dub because the original is trademarked, and he is the only member of Class 1-B whose hero name comes with an epithet.
