Shin Nemoto

Under the black plague mask every one of the Eight Bullets wears, Shin is slim, with short pale hair parted so the bangs fall across his forehead. The rest of the look borrows from several eras at once: a black cape, a black bowler hat, cropped baggy trousers, and washed-out sneakers. Kohei Horikoshi has said he intended to show the face at some point and dropped the idea after concluding that Shin would never take the mask off in Overhaul's presence.

A Quirk that pulls the truth out of anyone tends to ruin your opinion of people, and Shin came out of it cynical, never having found a single person worth trusting. He claims emotion is dead weight when there is work to be done, though he said it while trying to break Mirio Togata's spirit, so whether he believes it is an open question.

Overhaul is the exception that shaped him, the one person he ever found sincere and therefore the one person he follows without reservation. Being trusted with the details of the plan convinced him he stood apart from the other seven, the only one fit to walk beside his boss, and he kept crawling back to Kai's side after a fight had already finished with him.

Confession forces anyone he questions to answer honestly. Mirio Togata read him instantly as someone who does not belong on a front line, and the read was fair; what Shin has instead is a handgun and decent aim, which pairs cleanly with Deidoro Sakaki, whose Sloshed wrecks an opponent's balance and leaves a target that stays put long enough to hit.

His real work happens before the shooting. Years as a con artist gave him the tricks and the Quirk gave him certainty, so he fights a psychological war, interrogating a victim, learning the mechanism, then talking them apart, which makes guerrilla tactics his natural ground. Questioning Mirio told him how Permeation worked and therefore how the hero had walked past Joi Irinaka and the rest of the compound's defenses untouched, and he spent the rest of the fight pressing on Mirio's guilt over failing to take Eri away the first time they met. Handed a finished Quirk-Destroying Bullet while barely able to stand, he understood he could never hit an intangible man and aimed at Eri instead, correctly certain Mirio would put himself in front of it. He was later disassembled and absorbed into Overhaul's fused body, and only came out of it when Eri's Rewind pulled the two apart.
