Eight Bullets

The Eight Bullets, written 鉄砲玉 八斎衆 and read Teppōdama Hassaishū, are the villainous yakuza enforcers of the Shie Hassaikai, and they serve as secondary antagonists throughout that organization's arc. All eight are men who had lost their dignity along with any reason to keep going, and who attached themselves to Kai Chisaki because he supplied one. The wreckage they came from is inseparable from what makes them formidable: their Quirks run uniformly dangerous and they use them with real resourcefulness. The group debuts in Chapter 138 and Episode 70, and by the arc's end every member is in custody.

When and in what order each man joined is largely unrecorded. Rikiya Katsukame had known his leader for years and related to him like a younger brother, which may account for the drift. Shin Nemoto, by contrast, was sought out on purpose, valued for his Confession Quirk and the years he had spent conning people. Toya Setsuno was left deep in debt by a lover's betrayal, and a pro hero interrupted his suicide attempt; Overhaul found him on the streets afterward. Yu Hojo worked for a man selling the gems his Crystallize Quirk produced, and was thrown away once they proved worthless. Soramitsu Tabe's Food Quirk and the appetite it saddled him with made him an outcast. Kendo Rappa burned off what a strict upbringing had built in him inside an underground fighting ring; Overhaul killed him with his Quirk, repaired him, and got a recruit whose only goal was to beat him someday, which is why the monkish Hekiji Tengai was brought in to hold his bloodlust down. Deidoro Sakaki's reasons are unknown.

Shin and Rikiya first surface beside Overhaul when he wrecks Team Reservoir Dogs, and again when he squares off against the League of Villains. Before the alliance is settled, Shin turns Confession on Twice and Himiko Toga to check whether Tomura Shigaraki intends to double-cross the yakuza.

Once the pros, their interns, and police units storm the Shie Hassaikai Compound, the Bullets are spent buying their leader time to run. Rikiya charges out first and Ryukyu slams him into the ground; the Trigger in his system then lets him drain the officers' vitality and break loose, until Ochaco Uraraka, Tsuyu Asui, and Nejire Hado combine to bury him. Mimic drops the raid team into a room held by Toya, Yu, and Soramitsu, and Tamaki Amajiki insists on facing all three alone. Through a long grinding fight in which they describe how their leader had collected them at their lowest, Tamaki smashes the trio into a wall, ties them up, and passes out. Elsewhere Kendo and Hekiji corner Fat Gum and Eijiro Kirishima, Hekiji's Barrier shielding Kendo's fists while Fat Gum swallows the punishment. Eijiro throws himself in front of his mentor at the critical moment, buying the seconds Fat Gum needs to unload everything he has stored. Kendo gets back up only to point him toward the first aid kit, steps on Hekiji to silence him, and admits he wants Eijiro again someday.

Deidoro and Shin ambush Mirio Togata as he closes on Overhaul and Eri, Deidoro wrecking his balance while Shin forces him to explain how Permeation works; Mirio steadies himself and defeats both. Shin later crawls back to shoot Mirio with the Quirk-Destroying Drug, aiming at Eri because he knows the hero will take the bullet for her, and is left stunned when the boy keeps fighting anyway. Overhaul afterward dissolves Shin's body into his own and reforms as a fusion that grants him Confession, then repeats the trick with the unconscious Rikiya; Eri's power undoes both. With Overhaul beaten, all eight are arrested alongside him, which is the end of the group.

The roster runs to Shin Nemoto, Rikiya Katsukame, Toya Setsuno, Yu Hojo, Soramitsu Tabe, Deidoro Sakaki, Kendo Rappa, and Hekiji Tengai, all yakuza affiliated with the Shie Hassaikai and all arrested.

The lineup answers to Buddhism's Eight Precepts, the strict guidelines kept by the most serious adherents, with each member standing as the antithesis of one. Kendo Rappa's appetite for violence contradicts the rule against killing; Toya Setsuno's Larceny contradicts the rule against taking what is not given; Yu Hojo's Crystallize resembles the jewelry the precepts forbid; Soramitsu Tabe's Food lets him devour far past the single permitted meal; Hekiji Tengai's Barrier builds the luxurious canopy adherents are told not to rest beneath; Rikiya Katsukame's Energy Suck drains life through physical contact, largely from Ryukyu's all-female team; Shin Nemoto's Confession makes him the only person in a room able to lie; and Deidoro Sakaki, an alcoholic, wields a Quirk that leaves others intoxicated.

One further possibility hangs over the group. When Overhaul first met the League of Villains, a yakuza wearing attire much like his own and the Bullets' turned up and proved willing to die for him, which suggests he may have belonged to the team before his death.
