Chapter 154

Fusion has left Overhaul energized. Deku takes stock: Sir Nighteye is shielding Mirio and Eri, Eraser Head has vanished, and the enemy is whole again. Overhaul turns his tongue on Mirio, calling a whole life of training worthless now that the Quirk is gone and insisting none of it would have happened had the boy stayed out of it. The loss is news to Izuku and Sir Nighteye. Overhaul keeps twisting, pointing out that continuing to play hero has now dragged others into the wreckage.

He charges. Izuku drops a rock column on him and it shatters; a second one fares no better, and the fragments come back as needle-sharp stone. His iron soles hold, and he breaks the field apart. Overhaul finds the whole approach unremarkable, right up until a hyper-density seal thrown by Sir Nighteye catches him. The detective orders Izuku to guard Mirio and Eri and takes the fight himself, and Izuku speeds off remembering Shota's warning not to cripple himself.

Asked where Shota is, Overhaul says the Erasure Quirk interested him and his men are walking the hero to the meeting room, which makes Sir Nighteye wonder whether the yakuza fears losing his own Quirk. The bullets, he concludes, are finished, and one has already been spent on Mirio. He needles Overhaul for being frightened of Mirio's strength, and Overhaul grows extra arms and attacks. Sir Nighteye slips every one of them. Recognizing the footwork, Overhaul guesses he is facing the teacher. Sir Nighteye remembers his lessons, glad and proud that the boy absorbed them, and vows to shield both Mirio and the girl the boy is determined to save.

Izuku finds them intact, breaks open the wall behind them to expose the route his group came through, and carries the pair into the passage to put distance between them and the fight. Eri apologizes; Mirio looks back. Sir Nighteye had used Foresight during the battle. What he sees is fixed, an absolute he proved to himself long ago by trying and failing to change it, and ever since watching All Might die he has refused to read anyone's fate and limits himself to seconds or minutes ahead. Every move he made was meant to deny Overhaul the future already in his hands, and stalling was the only thing left to do. His limit arrived, and reconstructed spikes ran him through. Touching Overhaul showed him what comes next, and inside a scene of his own likely defeat he held onto a thread: Eri saved, the boys alive, Overhaul beaten and behind bars.

Overhaul steps past the impaled man and goes after Izuku, who is horrified by the sight and stomps the floor with enough force to deny the ground for reconstruction. The plan is transparent, but the power behind it is not what it was minutes ago, because Izuku has opened One For All to twenty percent despite the pain. Told that joining the fight will kill him, Izuku answers that nobody is dying here whatever fate has decided, and charges in swearing to bend the future.

Izuku and Sir Nighteye reach the fused Overhaul, and Sir Nighteye takes over the fight so Izuku can protect Mirio and Eri.

Overhaul reveals that Shota Aizawa has been captured because of his Erasure Quirk.

The rules of Foresight are laid out, including that Sir Nighteye stopped reading futures after seeing All Might's death.

Overhaul fatally impales Sir Nighteye, who glimpses a hopeful outcome while touching him.

Izuku unlocks One For All at twenty percent and declares he will change the future.

Unforeseen Hope is chapter 154 of My Hero Academia, written and drawn by Kohei Horikoshi. It was published October 2, 2017 in issue 44 of that year, runs 17 pages, and appears in Volume 17 during the Shie Hassaikai arc.

Kai Chisaki and Izuku Midoriya share the cover. The chapter stays in the Shie Hassaikai Compound, features Foresight alongside One For All and Overhaul, uses Full Cowl as its super move, and involves the Quirk-Destroying Drug and Hyper-Density Seals. Episode 75 adapts it. The author comment apologizes for another week off.
