Chapter 217

Around seven in the evening, Izuku Midoriya and Katsuki Bakugo trade blows at Gym Gamma. Katsuki wants Blackwhip, and Izuku admits he cannot summon it. All Might halts the session to talk it through, and Katsuki observes that the tendrils only surface when Izuku's life is on the line, which does nothing for All Might's nerves.

A flashback covers their earlier discussion of the tendrils and the predecessor who owned them. Asked how he knew, All Might confesses he learned it from Izuku and nothing more, and marvels that One For All can hand its bearer the Quirks of everyone before him, something he doubts Nana Shimura ever suspected. Katsuki digs for a trigger; Izuku has only the line that the time had come, and wonders about an outside catalyst. Katsuki names the obvious candidate: All For One, who built the Quirk to begin with and who wields many himself.

Back at the dorms, Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu is loudly cataloguing how Hardening and Steel differ at a thoroughly beaten Eijiro Kirishima, while Tenya Ida sprints past announcing beef stew. Class 1-B has moved in for the evening, and the common room is a happy mess of both classes.

Shoto Todoroki asks whether Izuku also carries two Quirks and whether he held back when told to come at him full force. Izuku rushes out that the tendrils might simply extend his original power, and that nothing was held back. Shoto accepts it, and Katsuki cringes at how dense someone so sharp can be. Izuku compliments the flames Shoto produced; Shoto brushes it off and mentions asking his father to teach him one of his fire techniques.

The next day the U.A. staff settle Hitoshi Shinso's promotion: it is happening. Walking out, Present Mic compares Hitoshi to a younger Shota Aizawa, asks whether he plans to repeat himself, and says the name Shirakumo. Shota tells him to keep it short.

Outside the teachers' dorms, Eri points at Neito Monoma and declares him U.A.'s dark side, which he loudly protests. Mirio Togata cheerfully admits teaching her that during the School Festival. Shota arrives and explains he needed Neito's help but would not leave him alone with Eri, whose mental health does not need his personality.

Inside, Neito tries Copy on Eri's Rewind. The horn grows in, the Quirk will not run, and he apologizes to a disappointed Shota. The rule, he explains, is that Rewind accumulates the way One For All does, and Copy takes the fundamental ability rather than energy that has been banked, so stockpiles are beyond him. Izuku quietly realizes this is why copying his Quirk never harmed Neito back in the exercise.

Why bother with the copy at all, Mirio asks. The reasoning: Eri does not understand her own power, so having Neito learn it would give her a path to learning it too. She apologizes for the trouble and says everyone would be better off without her ability, and Izuku shuts that down. Her power saved him, he tells her, and what a power is worth comes down to how it is used, the way a knife is dangerous on its own yet makes every kind of food in the right hands. Encouraged, Eri promises to try, and Izuku privately swears to master the Quirk completely.

All Might clears Izuku to spar with Katsuki so the abilities buried in his Quirk can be drawn out.

Katsuki proposes that All For One's influence explains Blackwhip's emergence.

Shoto turns to Endeavor for a new Ultimate Move called Flashfire.

A person named Shirakumo is revealed to belong to Present Mic and Shota's shared past.

Neito establishes that accumulation-type Quirks such as Rewind cannot be copied.
