Chapter 387

From a prison lockup, Geten tells his neighbor Atsuhiro Sako that Himura blood runs thick. The Himuras once led a village, protecting their wealth and pride by spinning off branch families, but the arrival of Meta Abilities undid them, because they refused to let the bloodline thin. Mr. Compress imagines what Shuichi Iguchi would say about a snobbish lineage with a prejudice against heteromorphs.

Marriages between branch families and distant relatives multiplied, Geten continues, and that insulation slowly shrank the clan out of existence. The end came when the head of the house began selling children off into marriages, scattering what remained. Geten was one of the scattered, until Rikiya Yotsubashi took him in. He observes that Meta Abilities compound in complexity with every generation, with unknown powers sleeping inside their users, while the human heart has never evolved at all, and he wonders what changes lie ahead. He closes by asking whether any word has reached Compress from the heroes or the Police Force, since killing time is all that is left until the war ends.

Some eight hundred meters out from the ruins of the Gunga Mountain Villa, Enji Todoroki is losing his pursuit of Dabi and learns from Counter-Force about the coming explosion. He knows about the evacuation blocks nearby, and about the heroes still tangled with Himiko Toga's Doubles inside the radius. The wounds All For One left on him are slowing him down, and luring Dabi any further has become impossible.

Burning up, Dabi screams for his dad to watch him, and in those eyes Endeavor sees young Toya. A devastating Vanishing Fist swallows him whole. Dabi latches on while Endeavor pleads with his son to put the flames out, telling him that watching his son die is not something he can do, but Dabi only loops the same words, his mind long gone. Endeavor registers that this fire is hot enough to burn even him and wonders how the boy is still holding together.

Reaching into Dabi's heart, he thinks about how a brush with death can awaken a Quirk, and how some people instead summon an absurd power in crisis, a thing unlike an Awakening that surfaces only at death's door. Inside Dabi's Phosphor, Endeavor recognizes Rei Todoroki's Frost, and understands that his son has manifested ice within his own Blueflame.

With his life unspooling before him, Endeavor tells Dabi he accepts full responsibility. He had believed his penance was to carry the burden and stay alive, and only now sees that Dabi has been watching him this entire time while he was never there to watch back. He refuses to let his son die alone, and refuses to let anyone else be dragged into their tragedy. He seizes Dabi, ready to use his own firepower to launch them both skyward and detonate together. Before he can climb far, with Dabi's body splitting apart, Rei appears and stops them both with her ice.

Geten is revealed to come from the Himura family, a proud and wealthy line that built branch families to keep its blood pure, only to fall apart once Meta Abilities emerged. Geten belonged to a branch family scattered after the main house began selling people off into marriage.

Endeavor learns of Dabi's impending explosion and begins to falter under his injuries and his son's heat.

He discovers that Dabi, on the verge of death, has manifested the ice of Rei's Quirk inside his own.

With nothing left to lose, Endeavor readies himself to launch the pair of them skyward and spare everyone else, and halts only when Rei arrives.

The chapter runs seventeen pages and was published on May 8, 2023, in issue 23 of 2023. It opens Volume 39 within the Final War arc, between Chapter 386 and Chapter 388, with Geten and Mr. Compress on the cover.

The anime adapts pages four through seventeen in Episode 157. The chapter continues the Todoroki Family vs. Dabi battle and moves between an unnamed prison and the Gunga Mountain ruins. Horikoshi's author comment describes being laid out by food poisoning.
