Chapter 419

The returned All For One rails at Izuku over the ruin of One For All and of Yoichi, then notes that Tenko's spiritual defeat inside the subconscious has handed him back the controls. He turns to the disintegrating Tomura and calls him a superego who could not surrender his own life, someone who followed guidance to the letter and amounted to nothing. Tomura says he does not understand, insists every decision was his, and All For One answers that this belief was the whole point: without the illusion of free will his subject's resolve would have withered, so the illusion had to be maintained and twisted.

His encounters with Daigoro Banjo and En Tayutai taught him that taking One For All meant out-willing its bearer. So while he was giving ground to All Might, he went looking for a soul that could grind that will down, hunting the strongest feeling a heart can produce out of a suppressed id, and prepared a bed in which hatred could take root.

He remembers telling Kotaro that heroes never turn up when they are truly needed, and that a child needs a sibling to lean on. The Shimuras' daughter was already too old to shape, so he stayed in the shadows and worked through small nudges. He took the Quirk Factor the boy had inherited from both parents and removed it before it ever surfaced, egged the father's harshness on, gave him heroes to worship, and waited for his opening, walking him home one afternoon and slipping him Decay hand in hand. The Quirk itself came from the Doctor's facility, a specific power he chose and then gutted, cutting out its restorative half so that only ruin remained before he made a gift of it.

Tomura buckles as the revelations land. All For One announces that every tragedy, every ordeal, every rejection and every scrap of validation was his to bestow, and Tomura's mental body cracks apart while faces from his past flash by and All For One shouts down his unwavering heart and orders him out of the body. The spirit is his to erase now; he had meant to keep it in reserve until after One For All was his, but that prize is off the table, so he does it now. Izuku is flung from the mindscape shouting at him, and both return to the real world.

Back in charge of Tomura's body, "All For One" mourns Yoichi and the intermediate plan lost with him. A memory keeps screaming inside his skull, so he moulds a stuffed hand of Tomura's across its mouth. Examining the vessel, he finds Decay gone along with the rage and hatred, the years of cultivation wasted and Yoichi gone with them, and settles for the hollow remainder of his ambition: ruling the world. Izuku shouts that he will not allow it and pitches forward, discovering both arms destroyed. Neither of them walked away clean, the villain observes, and calls loss the engine of strength, a narrative he intends to write, a pitiful finish for a child who had nothing to lose. He readies an attack and Cellophane's Tape catches him first, his presence so slight that focusing on Izuku muffled what Danger Sense tried to tell him. They have come to save him, Cellophane declares, and Tailman and Sugarman land Sugar Knuckle and Tornado Tail Dance to blast the villain back, before Eraser Head steps out of a cloudy Warp Gate apologizing for the wait.

All For One lays bare his engineering of Tomura's entire life.

Lariat and Smoke-Eater taught him that seizing One For All demanded overwhelming will, so he set out to manufacture a soul that had it.

He pushed Kotaro toward a second child, then took the boy's inherited Quirk Factor away before it ever surfaced.

He steered the upbringing from the shadows, feeding Tenko's worship of heroes via his playmates while stoking the father's resentment into cruelty.

Disguised, he later walked the boy home and handed him Decay, which turns out to be Overhaul's power copied and stripped of its restorative half.

Overhaul himself is revealed to have lived in an orphanage run by Kyudai Garaki, a candidate vessel before he joined the Shie Hassaikai.

The revelations break Tomura's mind, his soul apparently destroyed, and Izuku is thrown out of the vestige realm.

Retaking the body, "All For One" gags the lingering memory of Tomura with a stuffed hand, notes that Decay, the rage and his brother are all gone, and commits to world domination anyway.

Izuku discovers both arms missing, and Cellophane, Sugarman, Tailman and Eraser Head arrive in time to save him.

"Design" runs seventeen pages, published in issue 19 of 2024 on April 8 and collected in volume 41 in the Final War arc. Episode 166 adapts it. The chapter opened with the ninth Popularity Poll color spread; All For One and Izuku Midoriya appear on the title page.

The Deku versus Tomura Shigaraki fight concludes here and Heroes versus "All For One" begins. The super moves used are Sugar Knuckle and Tornado Tail Dance.
