Chapter 7.5 (Vigilantes)

Sharper command of Slide and Glide lets Koichi Haimawari knock out his daily good turns at speed: a stranger's litter into the bin, a boy's ball retrieved from the road, a forgotten lunch delivered to a daughter, a schoolgirl ferried to class. The neighborhood repays him by calling him the Hauler instead of the Crawler.

Pop☆Step diagnoses the problem as everyone seeing a handyman, and tells him to drop the empty cans in favor of actual hero work. Koichi will not quit over image, because abandoning it would not be true to who he is.

Knuckleduster shows up with different garbage in mind, the Trigger users, identifiable by their blackened tongues. His plan is a beating, which strikes Koichi as far too extreme. He and Pop☆Step supply an alternative: a surprise fan photo session where everyone poses with their tongue out, exposing any junkie in the crowd. Left with nothing to punch, Knuckleduster fidgets and boots over a trash bin.

An enormous black blob then materializes, thrilling him. Reading it as a villain, he judges the dark body resistant to blows and marks the white face as the weak point. Koichi draws its attention, Knuckleduster lands on the face, and the elastic body absorbs everything. The mass starts shrinking and he gives chase.

The trail ends in an alley holding five bystanders, and his instincts settle on the little girl. He grabs her; Koichi and Pop☆Step haul him off before a beating starts, and Pop☆Step spots the hero license she carries. The girl explains she traveled from Tokyo for a Hero Office visit, got lost, and used her Quirk to make herself more visible.

Apologies are offered and accepted, and she mentions a one o'clock interview with Team Idaten. Koichi decides Knuckleduster had it right about there being work only vigilantes can do alongside the heroes' own duties. Later at the apartment, he reports getting her there on schedule. Pop☆Step is relieved the misunderstanding was forgiven, since it could have branded them villains. Knuckleduster shrugs that a punch or two would have been fair payment for such a deceptive face, to Pop☆Step's disgust.

Koichi's newfound Quirk control makes his good deeds efficient enough that locals rename him the Hauler, and he refuses Pop☆Step's advice to abandon the small stuff. The trio devise a photo-session ruse to identify Trigger users by their black tongues rather than beating confessions out of them.

Enigma debuts as the giant black blob and is nearly assaulted by Knuckleduster in her true form as a small girl, until her hero license surfaces. Koichi carries her to her Team Idaten interview on time, and takes from the episode that vigilantes have their own irreplaceable role.

A seventeen-page bonus chapter hanging off Chapter 7 of My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, written by Hideyuki Furuhashi with art by Betten Court, collected in volume two and originally printed in GIGA 1, 2017. It belongs to the Vigilantes Beginnings arc and precedes Chapter 8.

The Crawler, Knuckleduster and Pop☆Step share the cover. Enigma makes her first appearance. Several Pro Heroes including Ingenium, All Might, Vlad King, Cementoss, Best Jeanist, Ectoplasm and Endeavor turn up only within fantasy sequences.
