History

His early dream had been to become a ninja, but he washed out and settled into accounting instead. A company brought him on to manage its finances, and only later did he discover the operation was a cover for the Mujina Bandits. Sickened at having helped launder their stolen wealth, he bolted, carrying the most recent haul with him. After slipping his former employers, he tried to begin again by giving the money away to a medical center. Soon after, he witnessed what looked like a pickpocketing and knocked out the man to intervene, only to learn the woman had been the real thief. Branded her accomplice, he was arrested and delivered to Hozuki Castle.

Behind those walls he managed to hide his ties to the bandits, though he feared being silenced to keep their secrets buried, so he offered Konoha intelligence on the Mujina in return for protection. When the gang's second-in-command arrived at the prison, Kokuri wounded himself to frame the man, landing his enemy in solitary while securing his own move to the guarded medical ward. He was suspicious of Boruto at first, subduing the young shinobi before verifying his story, and later he was stabbed by an intruder while recovering. With covert help from Boruto's team he was relocated to their cell, and the pass used against him was traced to a fellow inmate named Arai. A staged confrontation, in truth a genjutsu cast by Sarada, tested his honesty when he admitted he had donated every coin of the stolen money.

Once the warden Mujo fell ill and the ruthless Benga assumed command, an order came to transfer Kokuri to a second facility teeming with Mujina members, prompting Team 7 to plan a breakout. During the escape he relied on his one real strength, a talent for swimming, and Sarada unleashed a flood tide that swept away both a pursuing hound and the seal burning him from within. Outside the castle, the bandit leader Shojoji ambushed the group, and Kokuri, sensing he might not survive, pressed a notebook of everything he knew about the Mujina into Boruto's hands. His insight that the enemy technique buckled under light helped the ninja turn the fight, yet Shojoji seized him underwater and used a Corpse Clone Technique to consume him, ending his life. The records he left behind gutted the gang's secrecy, and Team 7 grieved deeply when the truth of his death was finally laid bare.
