Tonbo Tobitake

A cigarette almost always dangles from his mouth, and the grey suit of the Intelligence Division makes up his everyday dress. Wrappings cover the top portion of his head, with his forehead protector pulled down far enough to hide his eyes entirely. Bandages also wind around his lower legs, worn above the standard sandals of a Konoha ninja.

On the surface Tonbo comes across as composed and unruffled, and he carries genuine confidence in his own skill, yet he is fair enough to credit talent when another shinobi has earned it. That poise hides a shorter fuse than expected, since he can turn abrupt and hot-headed, a side that surfaced when he manhandled Komaza to hammer home a warning.

Tonbo works within the Konoha Intelligence Division, where his talent lies in supporting Inoichi Yamanaka during mind-probing sessions that pull useful secrets from captured enemies. He is quick and physically strong, able to close on a target in an instant and pin him with a single arm, and his eye for detail is keen enough that no examinee's movement slips past him. During the written stage of the Chunin Exams he served as one of the proctors screening for cheaters; when Komaza objected to being flagged five times, Tonbo slammed him into a wall and reminded him that the monitors were elite chunin picked precisely so nothing would escape their notice.

Anime appearances add further duty. He and Iwashi Tatami warned Tsunade that Mizuki and the Legendary Stupid Brothers had broken out of prison, and he later joined a mission into the Land of Vegetables and helped guard the village against a possible attack. In Part II he assisted Inoichi's interrogation of Yudachi alongside Shimon Hijiri and Mawashi Dokuraku, then helped divert Pain's Animal Path so Inoichi could finish analysing the recovered memories. He also appears briefly among the villagers in Naruto's Sage Mode flashback in the Blood Prison film.
