Back

Ūhei is one of the ninken that Kakashi Hatake keeps under personal contract, a greyhound-shaped hound with a razor-keen nose. Across both halves of the story he runs with the summoned pack to chase down fugitives and pin enemies still, letting his master strike without fear of a counter.

Appearance

Bandages set Ūhei apart from the rest of the pack, wound around his head, his throat, and a single front paw. His slender frame and long muzzle give him the unmistakable outline of a greyhound. Rust-toned auburn fur covers most of him, offset by a pale belly and a white snout. Like his packmates he wears the standard blue vest bearing the heno-heno-moheji face seal, though his Konoha headband sits at his neck rather than across a brow.

Abilities

A powerful sense of smell lets Ūhei fix on a scent and run it down with little trouble. His tracking is not limited to the surface either, since the Summoning: Earth Release: Tracking Fang Technique allows him to pursue a quarry underground. Once a mark is cornered, he can clamp it in place so Kakashi lands blows freely. He also excels at group work, and the dogs improvise offensive and defensive formations mid-battle that lean on their agility and strong limbs.

History

In the anime backstory, Ūhei joined the pack soon after they sealed their pact with Kakashi, helping to search for the captured Rin Nohara and drawing enemy attention so the group could break away; the dogs later chased a fleeing Orochimaru as well. On the road to the Land of Waves, Kakashi called them up to run down the rogue swordsman Zabuza Momochi, and they bit into him and held him fast so the Lightning Cutter could land safely. The pack was summoned again to trail Naruto's squad as it chased Sasuke, and, in the anime, to scout Takumi Village.

In the second half of the series the hounds picked up Sasori's trail from a scrap of cloth, then hunted Itachi Uchiha, with Ūhei and Urushi paired alongside Sai, who dubbed him Pochi. He also ferried intelligence scrolls to allied villages ahead of the Kage summit, and during the Tobishachimaru crisis he sniffed out the exploding tags planted aboard and handed them over to Might Guy.
