Brown hair, spiky and reaching his shoulders, is gathered behind him in a ponytail. A faint mark sits just below his left eye. For clothing he favours a green top with a raised collar and a v-shaped neckline, layering mesh mail beneath it, and he rounds out the outfit with grey trousers and open sandals.

A stubborn streak runs through Watase, most visible in his insistence on joining the Fourth Shinobi World War even though his age barred him from it. He carries real ambition too, arguing that lineage and connections no longer decide who counts as a hero or a future Hokage; what matters, he holds, is what a shinobi accomplishes in combat, and he points to Naruto as proof. His run-in with Konohamaru converts him to the Will of Fire. Among his peers he enjoys a reputation for being cool.

During a gathering convened by Ebisu, Watase bemoaned that an earlier birth would have let him fight at the front. When Konohamaru rallied the village's genin against the looming danger, Watase snapped at him to quit pretending to be Hokage, and the argument escalated until he drew a kunai. The standoff cooled before real harm was done. He went on to help repel the Sumo Wrestlers, afterward telling Konohamaru that the Will of Fire would live on through him. His final duty had him assigned to a genin unit patrolling the village's districts.
