Naruto's Rival

Tsunade fumes that Orochimaru has once again slipped away, and Shizune mentions that Konohamaru has been learning the Rasengan from Naruto, prompting a wager over whether the boy will succeed. Konohamaru pops the rubber ball Naruto gave him using his Sexy Technique, then goes to show off, discovering that Naruto has moved on to Wind Release training. When Konohamaru bursts the ball, Yamato and Kakashi are flustered to see he did it through the Sexy Technique. A proud Naruto tells him to attempt a shadow clone next, but the boy cannot manage it, and instead dares Naruto that he will learn the Shadow Clone Technique before Naruto finishes his current step in Wind Release.

After several failed tries Konohamaru collapses, and Moegi and Udon fetch food pills from Sakura, the same ones fueling Naruto's own training. Naruto completes his step first and wins the wager, and soon afterward Kotetsu and Izumo bring word of Asuma's death, followed by the jonin's funeral.

While Naruto was away fighting Kakuzu, Konohamaru finally grasped the Shadow Clone Technique and moved on to the last stage of Rasengan training, forming it beside Naruto as Tsunade and Shizune looked on. Before departing for Mount Myoboku to study Senjutsu, Naruto entrusted Konohamaru with a treasure of his, his old orange jacket. When Pain's Assault leveled the village, Konohamaru wielded the Rasengan to defeat the Naraka Path, and on Naruto's return he revealed that he had preserved the jacket by tucking it into the valuables storage of the evacuation shelter.

This is an anime-original clip-style entry revisiting Konohamaru's growth. The container holding Naruto's saved jacket is the very same box that stored the scarf Kushina knitted in The Last: Naruto the Movie, and the scarf itself is visible beside the jacket. In the manga, Naruto instead demonstrates the Rasengan and its three steps to Konohamaru at the close of Part I.
