Team 7: The First Mission!

Reporting to the Hokage's office, Boruto and his squad receive their first job. Konohamaru explains that graduates fresh from the Academy start with menial errands, and when Boruto grumbles about simply getting them out of the way, Naruto overhears and corrects him: no task deserves to be rushed through carelessly. Their orders send them to drive raiders out of Green Banks, a small village whose storehouses are being emptied after a drought ruined harvests across the region. Boruto still assumes it will be easy, Sarada bristles at being grouped with him, and Naruto stresses that even a D-rank posting matters. At home, Hinata recalls her own nervous first outing during a more dangerous, war-torn era.

The team sets off, with a parallel mission underway for Shikadai, Inojin, and Chocho, who are escorting a wealthy woman. En route, Sarada warns Boruto not to tarnish her record and her ambition to become Hokage, and Mitsuki teasingly claims the two get along, irritating them both. A rustle in the brush turns out to be only a boar. At a suspended bridge, a girl named Kiri doubts the young ninja but lowers the crossing anyway. The squad learns the village's previous leader died as the raids began and his daughter now heads it, and that rival villages have also started hiring shinobi.

Konohamaru privately cautions that a clash with other ninja would raise the job to B-rank, beyond the genin's readiness. A sudden disturbance reveals an enemy shinobi has killed a villager, and Boruto rushes in; Konohamaru intervenes and the attacker, Ashimaru, withdraws. Pressed to be honest, Kiri admits the rivals covet the deed to the bridge. That night the foes strike again, torching a house, and villagers under genjutsu turn on the team. One controlled resident seizes Kiri as a hostage. Sarada cannot locate the caster with her Sharingan, so Mitsuki sweeps the puppeteered villagers off their feet with Wind Release, reasoning the real enemy would resist it. In the confusion Kiri is spirited away, and Konohamaru rebukes Boruto for charging in without a word to his teammates.

Team 7 is assigned its first D-rank mission, expelling bandits from the village of Green Banks. Naruto and Hinata each impress on the rookies that early missions still matter. The squad discovers rival shinobi are involved, raising the stakes toward B-rank, and Konohamaru drives off the attacker Ashimaru. The enemy learns of the Leaf's involvement and hunts the deed to the bridge. A nighttime genjutsu assault turns villagers against the team, Kiri is taken hostage and abducted, and Konohamaru scolds Boruto for acting alone.

This is episode 40 of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, part of the Genin Mission Arc. It aired in Japan on 10 January 2018 and in English on 21 July 2019. The opening theme is OVER and the ending theme is Telegraph Soul. The episode's trivia notes a geographic inconsistency: Green Banks is described as near the border of the Land of Fire and the Land of Wind, though those two nations do not actually share a border.
