The Two Kings

Now grouped as a squad, Naruto, Sakura, and Sora are meant to drill new team formations with Yamato, but Naruto and Sora would rather keep grinding on nature transformation. Naruto asks whether he might pick up a second element such as Water Release by the time he makes Jōnin, and Yamato explains that affinities are innate, with the strongest one leaving the others far weaker, and that no shinobi has ever wielded all five. That leaves Naruto puzzled over how Fūka managed exactly that. Asuma arrives and calls the formation drills pointless, since Sora will not stay on Team Kakashi long and both boys prefer charging in over cooperating, advising Sakura and Yamato to simply support them.

In her office, Tsunade shares a warning from Chiriku about Sora. Roughly ten years earlier the boy loosed a strange power that came close to leveling the Fire Temple and hurt many monks, yet exams never pinpointed its source, and though the outburst never recurred, the survivors came to resent him, which is why Sora feels the temple was never truly home. Yamato notes how oddly Sora's circumstances mirror Naruto's. Out in the forest, Asuma oversees the pair honing Wind Release and is impressed that they can gouge a tree without chakra blades. After treating them to Ramen Ichiraku, he pulls Sora aside and returns his Chakra Enhanced Triple-Bladed Claw, reforged with the same alloy as his own trench knives. Sora offers no thanks and storms off.

Asuma privately recalls that he was the one who slew Kazuma, Sora's father, after Kazuma plotted to kill the Hokage and hand the neighboring lands to the Fire Daimyō. Kurenai, reading his heavier smoking as a sign something troubles him, urges him to quit. Word also reaches Tsunade that Danzō has slipped his Anbu watchers. Watching a boy thank his father over food reminds Sora of the gratitude he withheld from Asuma. Naruto spots Sora from a bridge, but so has Furido, the figure behind the grave robberies, who corners the boy alone. Urging Sora to unleash his hidden power for the Land of Fire, Furido presses two king pieces from a shōgi set into his hand and reveals that Asuma killed Kazuma. Retreating to the woods, Sora rebuffs Naruto, pours his fury into his chakra, and hurls a kunai clean through a tree to shatter the boulder beyond it.

Yamato lays out how chakra affinities work and confirms no shinobi has ever commanded all five natures. Chiriku's message uncovers Sora's near-destruction of the Fire Temple years earlier. Asuma returns Sora's reforged bladed claw while hiding that he killed the boy's father, Kazuma. Furido reveals that truth to Sora and hands him the two king pieces, triggering an outburst of his sealed power. Danzō escapes Anbu surveillance.

The episode is part of the anime-original Twelve Guardian Ninja arc and pointedly draws parallels between Sora and Naruto as outcasts carrying dangerous power. It airs under the opening Blue Bird and the ending Gentle Rainbow. The title's two kings refer to the shōgi pieces Furido gives Sora, a symbol tied to the manipulations pushing the boy toward rage.
