Obito Uchiha

Turning up late to the Academy's entrance test, Obito is taken aback by the sheer number of hopeful young shinobi gathered there. He trades a hard look with Kakashi before Rin hands him his registration forms. Years on, during the Chūnin Exams, he again shows up late, this time for the second stage set in the Forest of Death, where he and his teammates Kakashi and Rin square off against Might Guy, Ebisu, and Genma Shiranui in a team clash.

Eager to catch Rin's eye, Obito pushes to the front and readies a Fire Release, only for a sweet an elderly woman had given him in thanks for carrying her bags to slide down his throat. Guy bluntly kicks him in that instant, unknowingly saving his life. Once Rin has patched him up, the two talk, and Obito voices his pride in the Uchiha clan and his ambition to reach Hokage.

After hard training for the third round, Obito faces Guy in the singles bracket and, despite his loud confidence, is beaten swiftly. When Rin later cheers Kakashi on as he bests Guy, Obito looks both envious and resigned that his hidden feelings go unreturned. Promoted to chūnin, he is approached by Rin and means to confess, but embarrassment stops him, and Kakashi's fresh rise to jōnin quickly overshadows the moment. Not long after, Obito loses his life on a mission alongside his team.

In the present, as the covering falls from Tobi's face, Kakashi and Guy are left aghast to recognize their fallen comrade Obito Uchiha standing before them.

Collected in volume 63 and published in 2012, this chapter belongs to the Fourth Shinobi World War: Climax arc, with the title rendered Uchiha Obito. The only page bearing dialogue is the last, a three-word line reading "You are... Obito?". A panel shows Obito with lighter hair after he parts from the old woman. Minato's face appears carved into the Hokage Monument although he had not yet taken the office, an error Masashi Kishimoto later apologized for and had removed in a subsequent chapter and the collected edition. Per earlier databook ages, several Chūnin Exam participants such as Asuma Sarutobi, Anko Mitarashi, Kurenai Yūhi, Hayate Gekkō, and Might Guy would not yet have graduated the Academy.
