Rehabilitation

Confined alongside White Zetsu and a second Zetsu whose face bears a spiral pattern, Obito grows irritated as the pair marvel at how human bodies operate, since they never have to eat, drink, or relieve themselves. He snaps that he should not be grouped with them, noting that only half his body is artificial. The two claim their assignment is to nurse him through his recovery until Madara awakens, and they press him about the bell-like noise and the muttered insult toward Kakashi that escaped him while he slept. Once Obito mentions that a third clone left to gather intelligence and that they can travel through the ground, the Zetsu launch into Madara's vision of a peaceful world.

Brushing the speech aside, Obito reaffirms that he will escape and rejoin Rin and Kakashi, then throws himself into a grueling recovery haunted by memories of the two. He recalls pressing his lips to a photo of Rin after masking over Kakashi's face on it, and a later attempt, once training ended, to hint to Rin that he cared for her, only to realize with irritation that her gaze was fixed on Kakashi instead of him. He also remembers hurting his hand during one session, after which Rin bandaged it and scolded him for concealing his injuries when it was her duty to watch over him. By the present, enough time has gone by that Obito's hair has grown out and he handles the artificial limbs flawlessly. White Zetsu then returns to warn him that his allies are cornered by Kirigakure shinobi. Obito hurls himself at the cave wall to break free, but only chips the stone and rips off his own right arm, so the spiral-faced Zetsu wraps around him like a living suit as the young Uchiha readies to leave.

The two Zetsu tend Obito's recovery and rehearse Madara's plan for world peace. His flashbacks dwell on his love for Rin and his rivalry with Kakashi. After mastering the artificial limbs, Obito answers a warning that Kirigakure ninja have surrounded his comrades, tears off his own arm forcing his way out, and lets the spiral Zetsu enclose him.

Placed in the Fourth Shinobi World War: Climax arc and collected in volume 63, the chapter charts Obito's shift from bedridden patient to masked agent. A pair of posters in his room nod to two artworks Hirohiko Araki produced for his 2012 JoJo Exhibition, one showing Iggy beside Jotaro and the other pairing Yasuho with Josuke.
