Chapter 22 of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations settles the drawn-out duel with Ao, as Boruto outwits the cybernetic warrior and spares his life, only for a mysterious newcomer to end the fight on his own terms.
Boruto acknowledges that his last strike fell short of finishing Ao, who discards his ruined jutsu-absorption arm. When Konohamaru senses an attack bearing down on Boruto, he shoves the boy clear and takes the hit from Ao's aerial drones, dropping unconscious as Sarada and Mitsuki rush to his aid. Katasuke deduces the drones run on Ao's chakra by remote control. Ao proclaims that he has left the shinobi behind and become a new breed of human, sending the drones aloft to strike, while Boruto soaks up the barrage with his own absorption arm and earns Ao's grudging praise for pushing him this far.
Once Ao halts the drone assault, Boruto swarms him with shadow clones, but Ao shreds them and seizes the boy bearing the absorption arm, noting that the Shadow Clone Technique, for all its strength, cannot replicate intricate machinery. As he brings his chakra blade to bear, Ao muses that Boruto would not have survived their first meeting had they been foes then. Mitsuki blocks Sarada from intervening, shielding her from the drones, as Ao warns he will deal with her next. Boruto insists Ao has already lost as a shinobi, then dissolves the clone holding the absorption arm and bursts from the rubble behind Ao, blade drawn, reminding him that a shinobi must read beneath what lies beneath.
Boruto severs Ao's prosthetic left arm and leg and drives home a Rasengan that hurls him into the ruins. Beaten, Ao is startled when Boruto merely sets the earlier screwdriver beside him rather than killing him, and cautions that mercy as soft as Naruto's will prove deadly someday. A revived Konohamaru marvels at the victory, Boruto rebukes Ao over Mugino's death, and Konohamaru calls for Ao's extradition to Konohagakure and orders reinforcements as Katasuke muses on the genin's promise. Then Ao spots Koji Kashin in the wreckage above and shouts his name; Koji summons a massive toad that brings the structure down, and though Ao uses Water Release to fling Boruto to safety, the toad crushes him to death. Koji Kashin wonders aloud what drove Ao to reach for ninjutsu at the end, and presents himself to Team Konohamaru and Katasuke.
Konohamaru is knocked out shielding Boruto from Ao's drones. Boruto uses his absorption arm and a hidden clone maneuver to sever Ao's prosthetic limbs and land a decisive Rasengan. Boruto spares Ao rather than killing him, and Konohamaru calls for his extradition. Koji Kashin appears, summons a giant toad that crushes Ao to death, and introduces himself to the team.
