Summary

Team Konohamaru is called in to their teacher's office, and along the way Boruto fills Sarada and Mitsuki in on his recent job guarding the daimyō's son, Tentō, describing how a shaky start had grown into a real friendship. Inside the office the three receive a B-ranked assignment. Nervous at first about work that serious, they take heart after learning that top shinobi like the Fifth Kazekage once tackled such missions as mere genin.

Key Events

Leaving the meeting, Boruto discovers the elusive card he has hunted for tucked into his pocket and realises Tentō must have planted it there. Badly as he wants to keep it, his conscience wins out, and he heads for the Konoha Mountain Villa to give it back. Hunting for Tentō's room, he instead overhears Ikkyū fretting with his guards that the boy has been abducted. Boruto lingers long enough to catch the ransom terms, five hundred million ryō plus the release of every prisoner from Hōzuki Castle, and to hear that Ikkyū means to keep the crime quiet, suspecting a traitor among his people. Boruto slips out and goes to Sarada's home, awkwardly apologising and telling her he cannot join the mission, which she accepts as something that must matter.

Notes

The captive Tentō is bewildered when his abductors show their faces and he spots Yamaoka, but the true culprit, Shojoji, steps forward and explains his Corpse Clone Technique. Sneering at the boy's love of shinobi, Shojoji claims he himself was one, if never printed on any collectible card. Thrown to the ground, Tentō finds the shuriken Boruto had given him and turns to fight, then moves to take his own life rather than be used, only for Shojoji to stop him and decide to devour his brain and wear his identity. Boruto reaches him in time and squares up against the Mujina Bandits. The installment belongs to the Mujina Bandits Arc and is collected in volume 4; the Viz edition titles it 'The Value of a Hidden Ace!!'.
