Overview

Long catalogued as a Paramecia, the fruit was secretly reclassified from a Mythical Zoan linked to the legendary Sun God Nika, a deception the World Government maintained for centuries. Only a handful of people grasp the truth, and the fruit's very existence went unrecorded in any modern archive.

It first belonged to Joy Boy in the Void Century, the earliest pirate of all, who awakened it ages before anyone else. After the Government finally secured it, Shanks and his crew stole it in transit, and a young Monkey D. Luffy then swallowed it without a thought.

Mechanics

The fruit permanently saturates the user's flesh with the qualities of rubber, an effect that never switches off. Limbs stretch, bend, bounce, and inflate, organs included, while the body shrugs off blunt punishment such as fists, clubs, bullets, and cannon fire, all of which simply rebound. Falls and impacts that would kill an ordinary person become harmless or merely uncomfortable.

Because rubber insulates, the wielder laughs off electricity, which famously let Luffy strike the lightning Logia Enel without Haki. Stretching stores energy like a drawn spring, converting short blows into long-range strikes and granting airborne movement by anchoring a limb and slingshotting forward, and the body can be pumped with air or blood for bursts of speed.

The hidden Mythical Zoan nature surfaces upon Awakening. Hair and clothes turn white, the eyes glow with ringed pupils, and steam curls around the figure as the user becomes the Warrior of Liberation, an embodiment of Nika. In this state, dubbed Gear 5, the wielder reshapes terrain and even living flesh into rubber, conjures objects from nothing, and fights with cartoonish freedom that unsettled Kaido. The Five Elders so feared its revival that they accepted an emperor's wrath to keep it dormant.

Against all this, slicing attacks ignore the rubbery defense outright, leaving the user as exposed to blades as anyone. Stretched limbs retract slowly, opening a window for counters, and rubber has a finite stretch limit past which the body tears and bleeds. Armament Haki, shockwave arts, Seastone, water, and contact with the Yami Yami no Mi each cancel the blunt immunity as well.

Notable Users

The fruit's only present-day eater is Monkey D. Luffy, who claimed it by accident as a boy in Foosha Village after Shanks' crew took it from a World Government escort guarded by CP9. Its prior wielder was Joy Boy, who awakened its power during the Void Century.

As a child Luffy fumbled his aim and timing, often sent spinning by recoil, but training in the jungle tamed the power before he set sail. Over the years he layered on the forms named Gear 2, Gear 3, and Gear 4, then unlocked Gear 5 against Kaido in Wano, the first awakening in centuries. He turns the ability to combat and to play alike, stretching to swipe food, amuse his crew, or rocket himself across great distances.
