Chess

Slightly above average in height, Chess has wavy lips and a perpetually mournful look. His costume is a checkered, jester-style outfit in green-blue with purple cuff trim, worn under a white winter cape that he knots at the chest, fitted with grey buttons and a light brown bow.

A quiver of arrows rides on his back, and he completes the look with dark green trousers and blue shoes fastened by white buckles. Six years earlier he topped the outfit with a pointed green-blue hood.

In his role as chief of staff, Chess dutifully recorded each new law Wapol decreed along with everything the king devoured. He carries a cocky streak, repeatedly boasting that he has pinpointed an opponent's weak spot, and he shows no reluctance about harming uninvolved bystanders.

Like his counterpart Kuromarimo, he treats Wapol with steady loyalty and deference, fighting on his king's behalf without hesitation.

As Drum Kingdom's chief of staff, Chess wielded real sway over the king and broad authority over the populace. He endorsed Wapol's purge of the island's doctors, sparing only the Isshi-20. He is physically formidable, an archer who fires multiple arrows at once with a large bow, and he routed both a force of castle watchguards and a pack of lapahns; his signature Checkmate sends a flaming arrow at his target. In the live-action series he instead wields an axe called Snowbreaker, skilled enough to wound Chopper.

When Blackbeard razed Drum Island, Chess and Kuromarimo followed the fleeing Wapol into roughly a year of exile as pirates. After crossing paths with the Straw Hats aboard Wapol's submarine, the Bliking Pirates returned home to terrorize the island, defeating Dalton before an avalanche from the lapahns buried them. Pursuing Luffy through the snow, Chess and his allies kept attacking until the lapahns intervened, and the trio later cornered Kureha and Chopper at Drum Castle alongside Luffy and Sanji. Humiliated once more, Wapol used his Baku Baku no Mi to fuse Chess and Kuromarimo into Chessmarimo, who pledged to guard the king and battled Chopper; the reindeer located the fusion's weak point at the chin and finished it with Kokutei Roseo. In the non-canon Stampede film, a de-fused Chess reappears serving Wapol in the Evil Black Drum Kingdom at the Pirates Festival.
