Appearance

Hinged tin plates make up Wapol's lower jaw, the feature behind his nickname, and his hair carries a deep violet shade on a broad, heavyset frame. With his Slim-Up technique he can devour his own bulk and reemerge tall and lean. While he held Drum he leaned toward tin-plate armor beneath a hooded cape cut from White Walkie hide, rounding it out with thick gloves, woolen shorts, a belt, and stubby boots. By the time his later realm is his to rule, that being the Evil Black Drum Kingdom, his wardrobe drops the armor for a patterned skirt and sharp, pointed sandals; he keeps the cape and a set of black gloves and now sports a black mustache and goatee.

Personality

Indulged as a child by a father whom Drum's people loved, Wapol matured into a craven, corrupt king with utter contempt for his subjects, abandoning his realm the instant the Blackbeard Pirates landed and carrying off its doctors and its soldiers, leaving everyone else behind to fend for themselves. He ruled purely to gratify his cravings, beating anyone who crossed him and treating his family's wealth and power as a blank check. Petty enough to shove a ten-year-old Vivi in hopes of sparking a war, he also showed an inability to learn, staying just as arrogant after a spell living homeless and eating refuse. Yet genuine cunning lurks beneath the buffoonery: he saw straight through Nami's lies and engineered the cruel Doctor Hunt to keep his people begging him for care. Above all he is a glutton who never stops eating, and he comically substitutes the insult baka with kaba, meaning hippo, which softens him into a clownish villain despite his depravity. Faint boundaries to his malice surface later, as Cobra's assassination horrified him and Charlos's attempt to enslave Shirahoshi visibly unsettled him.

History

The throne of Drum passed to Wapol on his father's death, and his reign turned tyrannical; six years ahead of the main story he banished nearly every doctor except his handpicked Isshi-20, scheming that a populace forced to grovel for treatment would stay loyal. Only the eccentric physicians Hiriluk and Kureha eluded him. He cackled at Hiriluk's noble suicide, then crushed and imprisoned his own captain of the guard, Dalton, for talking back. When the Blackbeard Pirates proved too strong, he fled outright, drifting the seas as the makeshift captain of the Bliking Pirates. Determined to retake his crown, he crossed the Straw Hats, got catapulted into the ocean after trying to swallow the rubbery Luffy, and ultimately squared off against Luffy and Chopper at his castle. There he showcased the powers of his Baku Baku no Mi, of the Paramecia class, which lets him eat nearly anything and reshape his body to mimic it, even fusing his retainers Chess and Kuromarimo into the combined fighter Chessmarimo. Luffy still flattened him, launching him far from the island with a Gomu Gomu no Bazooka.

Exiled a second time, Wapol wandered in a gluttonous binge, was arrested, sank into poverty, and then blundered into riches when his garbage-built creations turned out to hold a novel alloy called Wapometal. That breakthrough founded the Wapol Konzern toy empire, won him Kinderella as a bride, and earned him a brand-new realm from the World Nobles, the Evil Black Drum Kingdom. Years on, he showed up at the Levely mainly to settle a score with Dalton, only to stumble onto Imu and the Five Elders murdering King Cobra. Recognizing that the secret doomed him, he bolted through Pangaea Castle, scooped up Nefertari Vivi during the escape, and slipped into hiding aboard Morgans' airship as a wanted fugitive.
