Famous in Orange Town for never abandoning the pet-food shop his late owner Hocker built, Chouchou is a small, fiercely loyal dog. Classified as a harmless Type B creature, he sided with the Straw Hats during the Orange Town Arc and helped them slip past an angry crowd.
Chouchou is a little white dog with slender ears, small black eyes, and a short tail shaped like a brush. While the Buggy Pirates held Orange Town, his body carried a number of injuries. Once the town and especially his master's store had been rebuilt, he put on a bow-tie for the celebration, and a fountain statue made in his image, crowned with a straw hat, was later raised in his honor.
Devotion to the memory of his departed owner Hocker stands above everything else for Chouchou, who gave the remainder of his life to standing guard over Hocker's shop. He is mostly still and silent, yet he turns aggressive the instant anyone abuses him or endangers the store. On rare occasion that loyalty reaches new friends, as it did with the Straw Hats, whom he shielded from a confused mob of townsfolk after Luffy avenged the ruined shop.
About thirty years after Orange Town was settled, Hocker opened the town's first shop selling only pet food, with Chouchou always beside him. The two lived together happily for ten years and grew dear to the townspeople. When illness struck, Hocker went to seek a doctor and never came back; Chouchou nonetheless stayed at his post day and night, kept fed mainly by the mayor Boodle. Several months later the Buggy Pirates seized the town, yet the dog refused to flee even as the pirates wounded him.
When Nami, Zoro, and a caged Luffy came upon the shop, Chouchou bit Luffy and swallowed the cage's key out of spite before Boodle stepped in and explained his story. He bit Mohji too, prompting the first mate and his lion Richie to attack and burn the store to ashes; the assault freed Luffy, who thrashed both of them and brought Chouchou the single salvaged pack of dog food. The dog then joined the evacuees and later blocked a hostile crowd so the Straw Hats could escape. After they left he helped chase off the remaining Buggy Pirates, biting Mohji as he fled. Two years on he guarded the larger rebuilt shop that now bears his name, and in the Egghead era he listened with Boodle to Vegapunk's broadcast.
