Appearance

An enormous man roughly two and a half times the height of an average person, Duval has a muscular chest but thin arms and legs. When introduced he wore a menacing iron mask trimmed with lengthy red hair tufts, which earned him the name Iron Mask Duval, plus shoulder armor, an open leather jacket, black trousers, cowboy boots, and a lengthy fur cape that together lent him an intimidating look.

Hidden beneath that mask, his face uncannily matched the crude, low-quality drawing of Sanji from the chef's first wanted poster, the only difference being eyebrows that swirl downward rather than up. Because he so resembled a wanted pirate, Marines and bounty hunters relentlessly chased him, and he bore old wounds from fighting them off, including a painful scar on his back. He had looked this way since birth, his own parents having judged him an ugly infant.

His confrontation with Sanji ended with the chef rearranging his entire bone structure through a barrage of kicks, an outcome that, against all odds, left him remarkably handsome and almost unrecognizable, retaining only faint spirals at the tips of his eyebrows. The crude operation left him struggling to wink, with eyes that sometimes blink out of sync. Delighted with the change, he abandoned the iron mask and took to calling himself handsome.

Personality

Before going to sea, Duval belonged proudly and unrepentantly to the mafia of his hometown, extorting money without remorse. By the present he had become an emotional figure ruled by anger, outrage, and a thirst for revenge, scarred in body and mind by years of being hunted, and he wept when first explaining his plight after losing his mask. He is neither clever nor inventive, since it never crossed his mind to alter his hair or facial styling so as to resemble the poster less, and Sanji's suggestion to do so stunned him.

So intense was his hatred of Sanji that even a passing reference to the chef sent him into wild rants until someone calmed him, during which he would lapse into his original country accent, a quirk he had carried from birth even before he could speak. Once Sanji reshaped his face, that hatred evaporated the instant he saw the handsome result, and his whole outlook turned positive, though he grew intensely vain and narcissistic, even substituting handsome for his name. Having befriended the Straw Hats, he now does everything he can to help them, locating Camie when she was taken and fiercely guarding the Thousand Sunny.

Abilities

Duval possesses tremendous strength, able to crush bundles of his metal harpoons in one hand, and he is a seasoned fighter who survived being hunted by powerful Marines and notorious bounty hunters. He thrashed Peterman of the Hound Pets with ease and scattered three Coffee Monkeys with a single kick while defending the Thousand Sunny, which he guarded for two full years with help from Hatchan, Bartholomew Kuma, and his Rosy Life Riders, though he falls well short of Sanji, who downed him instantly. Experienced in kidnapping despite disliking the trade, he relies on coordinated group tactics and knows how the Sabaody slave auctions operate.

While his followers ride giant Flying Fish, Duval mounts a large bison named Motobaro. His preferred weapons are harpoon guns, one a rifle-like model that holds and fires four rounds at once, the other a launcher resembling a handheld rocket battery that empties whole magazines in a single deadly volley. His harpoons, called Scorpion's Poison harpoons, are coated in a venom potent enough to kill within three minutes and corrosive enough to make a hull of Treasure Tree Adam wood steam on contact, and he stows them inside a quiver worn at his left hip.
