Appearance

A young kissing gourami mermaid, Camie sports dark purple eyes, green hair, and noticeably full lips, her tail pink with pale fins and a white dorsal fin tracing her back. In keeping with the fish she resembles, shock contorts her into a wild face-fault, eyes bulging and mouth gaping with her tongue flicking out in a zigzag. At her first encounter with the crew she had on a pink-and-yellow shirt that left her midriff bare, toting her takoyaki in an orange clam-shaped pack.

After the two-year gap her look matures without changing drastically: a longer, slimmer tail with a curvier caudal fin, dyed hair parted to one side, and a strappy jagged-hemmed top still from Pappag's Criminal line, finished with a beaded necklace and a flower bracelet. The anime gives her hair a brighter shade of green.

Personality

The smallest surprise sets Camie off, her reactions wildly outsized next to anyone else's. Bad luck dogs her and her starfish Pappag, who are forever being gulped down by sea kings or abducted, in her case largely because she trusts so readily and grasps so little. By the time the Straw Hats met her she had been swallowed twenty times over and snatched by the Fish-Man Pirates on thirty occasions, yet a rescuer, most often Hatchan, always appears. Her speech has quirks too, saying "human person" in place of human and tacking "chin" onto people's names.

Naive as she is, she is kind, caring, and trusting to a fault, easily flustered by anything romantic. The timeskip leaves her steadier, more grown, and more self-reliant, living on her own and guiding Luffy and the others sensibly through Fish-Man Island, taking charge when Sanji's blood loss turns dangerous.

History

Roughly eight years before the story opens, Camie and Pappag stood in the crowd signing Queen Otohime's petition. Her cover-story beginnings show the pair swallowed by a sea boar that Hatchan saves; he briefly barters her to Macro's crew for a treasure map, then thrashes them and frees her, and the trio travel on together, aiding starving headband catfish whose gratitude earns Hatchan the Takoyaki 8 stall.

In the Sabaody Archipelago Arc, Luffy rescues Camie and Pappag from a sea beast, and she tumbles onto the Thousand Sunny atop a smitten Sanji. Hearing that Macro and the Flying Fish Riders have abducted Hatchan, she recruits the crew to help in return for directions to Fish-Man Island. Once they save Hatchan and Sanji reshapes Duval's face, the group sets off for Sabaody to locate a coating mechanic. While enjoying Sabaody Park, Camie is grabbed by Peterman's gang and hauled to the Human Auctioning House. Fitted with an exploding collar and put on display in a tank, she is sold to the World Noble Rosward Charlos, but chaos erupts when Luffy strikes Charlos for shooting Hatchan. Zoro cuts her tank open, and Rayleigh, the very mechanic they had been seeking, fells Shalria before she can fire on Camie and safely removes the collar.

Following the Marineford war she turns up again aboard the Sunny with Hatchan and Pappag, recommending the Mermaid Cafe. In the Fish-Man Island Arc she fishes the scattered, drowning Straw Hats from the water and shelters them at Mermaid Cove, steering them around the island and arranging a blood transfusion to save Sanji. She helps them slip past the New Fish-Man Pirates and the palace mix-up, reunites with Jinbe at the Sea Forest, and stands by the crew through the struggle against Hody Jones. With the island at peace, she waves the Straw Hats off from the shore as they depart for the New World.
