Summary

As the chapter opens, the crew argues over tactics for taking down the Riders, with Usopp proposing cannon volleys while Camie and Pappag fret over their captured friend. At the enemy base, the assembled gang wonders why they were recalled, and their leader explains he wants the pirates seized alive. He then unloads a furious speech about the man he loathes, his followers nodding along, before presenting the three Macro Pirates and thanking them for grabbing Hatchan, since the prisoner has drawn the Straw Hats right into his grasp.

Locked in a cage, Hatchan dreads facing the crew given his ugly history with them and worries whether they also hold Camie. When the Sunny finally arrives, Camie shrieks Hatchan's name, and he hides beneath a cloud of ink. The pirates know the voice but not the changed shape, so Sanji asks how Arlong is doing, and Hatchan reveals the Marines rounded up Arlong's whole crew while he broke free to chase his dream of a takoyaki stand.

Key Events

Luffy suddenly recognizes the octopus fish-man and crows that he knew it. Usopp then recounts for the newer crewmates the cruelty Nami once suffered when Arlong's gang ruled her hometown, and several members feel torn about the promise they made to save him. Camie throws herself off the ship to rescue Hatchan on her own, only for the submerged Macro Pirates to seize her, exposing that all the Riders lurk beneath the surface too. Nami argues Hatchan is blameless and worth saving since a vow was given, which Sanji finds endearing. Distracted by visions of the octopus fritters Hatchan could make, Luffy hurls his rubber arms off the boat to reclaim Camie and Pappag, then orders Zoro to slash the cage bars. The Riders crow that the trap has worked and the crew is encircled, and the leader signals the attack.

Notes

The cover continues the CP9's Independent Report and confirms the agency survived the Buster Call, with Blueno opening an Air Door through his Doa Doa no Mi to carry everyone, a half-dead Rob Lucci included, to safety. In the story proper, the crew meets Hatchan once more and chooses to rescue him in spite of the suffering the Arlong Pirates inflicted on Nami. Hatchan discloses that the Marines are holding Arlong and the others somewhere, while he escaped to open his takoyaki business. This chapter corresponds to Episode 387 in the anime.
