Trickery is the heart of Ed's trade. He feels no guilt about lying outright when a falsehood can pad his profits, and he reads his customers shrewdly, pouncing the moment someone looks dazzled by his goods. Usopp proved an easy mark: Ed produced a flimsy toy pistol, fabricated a glamorous history for it, and steered the young sniper into buying it along with plenty more. A constant habit of rubbing his palms together betrays his scheming mindset.

During the Loguetown Arc, Usopp wandered into the shop and began browsing the shelves. Ed greeted him at once, insisting that every item on display had been carried back alive from the Grand Line by veteran pirates. When Usopp marveled that the goods had all seen real adventure, Ed agreed and flattered him as exactly the sort of sea-faring warrior his store catered to. He then dangled a toy-like gun, calling it a prized possession of Gold Roger, and the captivated Usopp begged to see more. The sniper eventually left loaded with purchases, and Ed cheerfully thanked him for the sale.
