Edamame

Of average build, Edamame carries strong animal markings left by an experiment that went awry. The boar traits run across him, from a pig-style snout to matching ears and coarse, bristly hair. He typically wears a white lab coat thrown over a red shirt. A certain medication lets him shift entirely into an enormous wild boar.

Gifted in research, Edamame is also a feared combatant because of his shapeshifting. Once he downs a special substance, he turns into a colossal wild boar of immense power. In that shape one stomp can hurl several boulders at his foe, and a single hard snort sends out a shockwave that easily knocks an opponent back. It is precisely this ability to assume a beast's form that makes others dread facing him.

Taking up science after his grandfather, Edamame teamed with Fang, Daizu, and Azuki on a study that used energy to transfer animal traits into people. One experiment went badly wrong, mutating the entire team into animals, and Raccoon, a brother of Fang's who was visiting at the time, got caught in it as well. Pig-like features marked Edamame, Daizu, and Azuki, while Fang became a wolf. They kept at the research even as the villagers grew to loathe them, and when pirates attacked, the scientists drove them off, suspecting the townsfolk had paid the raiders to wipe them out. In the game, once the Straw Hats reach the island and are themselves changed into animals, Chopper sets out to learn why and runs across Edamame on the grassland with Luffy. Sure the pair had been sent to kill him, Edamame blocks their path, though he stays open to conversation until Luffy bluntly states he means to take Fang down. The fight breaks out, and Edamame becomes a giant boar to crush Chopper, only to lose and pull back. He bars the group once more on the fortieth floor, pausing first to check that Raccoon is well, then falls a second time, opening the route to Fang. After Fang is beaten and drops his plan, Edamame attends the celebration the whole village holds.
