Appearance

Tall and dark-skinned, Gem keeps his black hair in short, spiky dreadlocks and rarely removes his sunglasses no matter the hour. A brown trench coat over a pink cravat completes his usual look, and like the other officer agents he displays his rank both on his garments and his skin, with a 5 on the coat and the same number inked onto his right shoulder.

Personality

In keeping with the other officer agents, Gem brims with self-assurance and dismisses friendship as a weakness, though he treated his partner Miss Valentine with a respect uncommon among Baroque Works duos. Mr. 3 dismissed him as an overreaching fool who never grasped his own limits and squandered his Devil Fruit. He also runs hot-tempered, prone to lashing out: he struck Karoo for refusing orders, kicked Luffy for soiling his shoe, detonated Brogy for running his mouth, and made an attempt on Usopp's life after being duped into eating spicy sauce. He owes his explosive power to the Bomu Bomu no Mi. This Paramecia fruit lets him set off blasts from any portion of his body, or all of it, without harming himself, while rendering him immune to explosions in turn; he can even charge his own secretions with that force, including the mucus from his nose. He carries a rapid-fire flintlock revolver from the South Blue for his Breeze Breath Bomb, breathing into the chambers so that six invisible, blast-charged air rounds strike a single target with far greater force than ordinary bullets, and he proved an accurate marksman at range against Usopp. Beneath it all lay a quieter wish, revealed through Miss Goldenweek's Colors Trap, to one day become a firefighter.

History

After signing on with Baroque Works as one of its agents and later gaining the Bomu Bomu no Mi, Gem boasted of never failing a mission until he met the Straw Hats. The two of them reached Whisky Peak not to help the lesser agents but to execute the exposed spies Igaram and Princess Vivi. After cutting down Mr. 9 and Miss Monday, the pair were swept up in the brawl between Luffy and Zoro and knocked unconscious. Regrouping with Mr. 3 and Miss Goldenweek at Little Garden, they captured Karoo and later Vivi, turning several Straw Hats into wax. The plan unraveled when Luffy and Usopp returned; Gem chased the pair, ate Usopp's gunpowder star harmlessly, but was finally tricked into swallowing one filled with Tabasco sauce, overheating him before Zoro struck him down. He afterward flew off with Miss Valentine and Miss Goldenweek, ending up surrounded by Marines on Kyuka Island, then freeing the captured agents and founding the new Spiders Cafe, where his old dream came true and he took up work as a fireman.
