Appearance
Age shows plainly on Genrin, whose deeply lined, toothless face is topped by little more than a topknot amid sparse hair. He dresses in a purple kimono dotted with green patches beneath a pale green coat decorated with a tree motif.
Personality
Genrin is a giving man who, worn down by illness, has already made his peace with dying. Like the rest of Ebisu Town, he held deep affection for Yasuie and pushed past his frail health in a bid to stop the execution. His emotions were robbed of their full range by a discarded, faulty SMILE fruit, leaving him able only to smile and laugh no matter the circumstance.
History
Genrin received a visit from Yasuie, who brought him a portion of millet and some water. Trying to refuse the gift, he urged Yasuie to keep the food for himself, only for Yasuie to press even more millet upon him. When Yasuie was condemned to death, Genrin joined his fellow Ebisu Town citizens in racing to the Flower Capital to rescue him, but they arrived too late and could only watch him gunned down. Because of their SMILE affliction, they could not openly grieve and instead broke into helpless laughter.
