Gyoru

An ever-present grin defines this stout, middle-aged vendor far more than any single feature. His dark hair rises into a pointed widow's peak topped by a small spiky cluster, and his face carries thick brows, narrow round eyes, and a scruff of chin stubble that he lacked in his younger days. For work he ties a pink cord around his head and pairs a yellow shirt with a black apron. Across the anime his coloring shifted between adaptations, with brown hair replacing the black and his outfit recolored in beige, white, or gray depending on the scene.

Warmth defines him. He treated the young Luffy with genuine affection and cheered the boy on toward his pirate ambitions rather than dismissing them as foolish.

Back when Luffy was a small boy in Foosha Village, he stopped by the stall Gyoru shared with Chicken to pick up fish. The vendor noticed the child's high spirits and teased him about whether Shanks and his crew had once again sailed off without him, also remarking that the boy could no longer swim, a comment Luffy brushed aside cheerfully while embracing the rubber powers he had gained. A decade on, once Luffy was finally old enough to leave, Gyoru chuckled at the realization that the boy had truly meant to chase piracy, and he watched the new captain set off on his journey.
